Thoroughbreds open Liberty League Championships with pair of runner-up finishes

ITHACA, NY – Highlighted by a pair of silver-medal performances, the Skidmore College men's and women's swimming and diving teams shined on day one of the Liberty League Championship meet on Wednesday.

The Thoroughbreds posted strong placements on the women's side, led by juniors Jae Mason and Kelly Hsu, who each re-set the record books after recording runner-up finishes in the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley, respectively. Skidmore totaled five individual podium finishers and added a relay podium performance, accumulating 247 points to sit third after the opening day. 

For the men, Skidmore secured a podium finish on the diving board and a relay podium placement. The Thoroughbreds also added three B-Final finishers and one C-Finalist in the pool, totaling 120 points to place fifth following Day One.

PODIUM FINISHERS
  • In the women's 500 free A-Final, junior Jae Mason took silver with a second-place swim of 5:06.50, setting a new program record for the second time on the day in the process. The junior finished first in the morning prelims with a time of 5:06.96.
  • Also competing in the A-Final, junior Sabrina Reed placed eighth with a time of 5:16.63. Reed finished seventh in morning prelims with a time of 5:13.62.
  • In the women's 200 IM A-Final, junior Kelly Hsu was out-touched by one-tenths to earn silver with a new program record time of 2:06.22. The junior finished first in the morning prelims with a previous record-setting time of 2:06.80.
  • In the women's 50 free A-Final, senior Gretchen Gwitt sprinted to a sixth-place time of 24.39. The senior finished sixth in the morning prelims with a sprint of 24.40
  • Also competing in the A-Final, junior Faye Mooney placed seventh with a time of 24.42. Mooney finished eighth in the morning prelims with a sprint of 24.43
  • In the men's 3-meter diving, senior Tomas Ruiz placed eighth with a score of 333.45 for a spot on the podium.
  • In the men's 400 medley relay, the group of Brandon Lis, Jaz Liotta, Thomas Gaughan and Jonah Vaynshtok clocked in at 3:32.34 to place sixth among the A-relay teams
MEN'S POINTS SCORERS
  • In the 500 free B-Final, junior Jonah Vaynshtok finished third with a time of 4:41.10. The junior also swam a time of 4:43.58 during the morning prelims.
  • In the 200 IM B-Final, freshman Jaz Liotta touched in seventh with a time of 1:58.07. The first year swam a time of 1:57.96 during morning prelims.
  • In the 200 IM C-Final, freshman Josiah Leese placed eighth with a time of 2:04.26. Leese swam a time of 2:03.12 during the morning prelims.
  • In the 50 free B-Final, sophomore Thomas Gaughan sprinted to a time of 21.71 to place sixth. Gaughan also swam a time of 21.69 during the morning prelims.
WOMEN'S POINTS SCORERS
  • In the 500 free B-Final, freshman Arianna Matthews took second with a time of 5:12.52 and narrowly missing out on the heat win by just two-tenths of a second. The first year swam a time of 5:18.39 during morning prelims.
  • Also competing in the B-Final, freshman Laurel Halfman placed fifth with a time of 5:19.72. Halfman also swam a time of 5:22.14 during the morning prelims.
  • In the 200 IM B-Final, freshman Emelia Lan won the heat with a top time of 2:12.79. The first year narrowly missed out on qualifying for the A-Finals after finishing ninth in the morning prelims with a time of 2:15.98.
  • Also competing in the C-Final, senior Lydia Walker took fourth with a swim of 2:18.85, while fellow senior Ella Palmet placed seventh at a time of 2:20.38. Palmet swam a time of 2:20.02 during morning prelims, and Walker clocked in with a time of 2:21.16 during the morning prelims.
UP NEXT
The Thoroughbreds take on day two of the Liberty League Championships tomorrow morning with the prelims at 10 AM, before the evening finals session begins at 6 PM. The order of events will be the 200 free, 100 fly and 400 IM. The Women's 1-meter dive event will also take place after the morning prelims.
