Thoroughbreds conclude fall season hosting Head of the Fish

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College men's and women's rowing teams concluded their fall seasons this past weekend at the 40th Head of the Fish Regatta. Crews enjoyed favorable racing conditions throughout the day, with sunshine and minimal winds on the 3,200-meter course.

The regatta opened with the men's collegiate singles at 8:21 a.m. Junior Riley Mook finished seventh in 14:11, while first-year Xavier Agran placed ninth in 14:22. Ryan Muldoon of Clarkson University won the event in 12:55.

In the women's collegiate singles, senior Delaney Miller and Amalia Inhofe represented the Thoroughbreds. Miller completed the course in 15:59, while Inhofe finished in 16:44. Middlebury won the event in 14:04.

Sophomores Jamie Kinast and Tabitha Webster represented Skidmore in the women's collegiate double, finishing in 16:15. Friends of Concord Crew won the event in 13:29.

In the women's collegiate eight, Skidmore finished 14th out of 16 entries with a time of 13:08. The crew consisted of coxswain Isadora Fuller, Britta Arvold, Delaney Miller, Ollie Bronson, Charlotte Visger, Amalia Inhofe, Jamie Kinast, Tabitha Webster, and Skylar Edwards. Cornell University won the event in 11:13.

The Thoroughbreds entered two crews in the women's collegiate frosh/novice four. Skidmore's A entry finished fifth in 14:56, led by coxswain Kiran Cox. Phoebe Rullman and Sylvie Tremblay comprised the stern pair, while Josephine Kim-Wendell and Alexandra Edfors rowed in the bow pair. Skidmore's B entry, consisting of novice athletes, finished ninth in 17:39. The University at Albany won the event in 13:33.

In the women's frosh/novice eight, Skidmore placed 21st out of 23 entries, completing the course in 14:49. Boston College won the event in 11:24.

"With this being the last Head of the Fish for me, it was a perfect end to the fall season with beautiful weather!" said senior Britta Arvold. "Having spent much of the season in small boats, it was incredible to see how each athlete's' skills transferred into rowing in an eight. We gave it our all and kept pushing which is a win for us."

The men's collegiate eight turned in Skidmore's top finish among its varsity eight entries, placing fifth in 10:39. Coxswain Isadora Fuller guided a lineup featuring Charles Ertz and Henry Shannon in the stern pair; Andrew Bertucci, Van de Venecia, Dimitri Moschochoritis, and Riley Mook in the middle four; and David Steinberger and Xavier Agran in the bow pair. Middlebury won the event in 10:14.

"Though we didn't medal, the 8 race was a win for us," said Junior David Steinberger.  "The boat was focused and consistently gritty all the way through the finish line against some fast crews. It is tough to beat a boat that refuses to back down, and that's who we want to be. We succeeded in being that crew on Saturday."

In the men's frosh/novice four, the Thoroughbreds earned their lone medal of the day, finishing third in 13:34. The crew of coxswain Kiran Cox, Robert Henricksen, Hank Harris, Finn Holliday, and novice rower Pompeo Cocozzelli represented Skidmore. The University of Rochester won the event in 12:30.

"Today was never about results," said head coach Manny Valentin. "Today was about using competition to help us achieve our internal goals. For many of our athletes, this was their first time racing a small boat. Others were in the stroke seat for the first time, while some were learning to row on a different side, port or starboard. Today was about putting ourselves in uncomfortable situations and proving we could perform. With seven athletes between the men's and women's programs studying abroad, and a long winter ahead, I am confident we can perform when spring arrives."
