Gritzmacher nets first career goal in Skidmore draw against Brewers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College men's soccer team secured a 1-1 draw against Vassar at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds (5-5-6, 2-2-4 Liberty League) took an early lead when freshman Nathan Gritzmacher fired in his first career goal, but a second-half answer by the Brewers (4-5-6, 2-1-4 Liberty League) forced the draw despite Skidmore holding an 18-10 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corners.

With one game remaining and ten league points, Skidmore is tied with Vassar for fourth place in a conference where all ten teams remain in playoff contention. A win in the regular-season finale could put the Thoroughbreds in position to claim the third seed and a chance to host a first-round Liberty League Tournament game, depending on other results.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Skidmore struck first in the 15th minute when a corner kick from sophomore Quinn McInerney deflected toward an open Gritzmacher, who fired the ball into the back right of the net from just inside the box.
  • The Brewers equalized in the 55th minute when Zapp Hotz snuck the ball past freshman Dante Fierro and into the bottom left corner of the net from well outside the box.
  • In the 78th minute, the Thoroughbreds nearly retook the lead when freshman Landon van Buren moved around a Vassar defender and fired from just outside the box, but a leaping save from the Brewers' keeper sent the ball over the bar for a corner kick.
  • Vassar played down a man beginning in the 84th minute after Eli Torrey received a red card for a tackle on Gritzmacher in the open field, but Skidmore were unable to take advantage and break through for the winner.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Gritzmacher finished with two shots and one shot on goal to go along with his first collegiate score.
  • Senior Colin Goodhines placed two of his four shots on goal.
  • van Buren placed two of his three shots on goal.
