Flickinger strikes late again in 1-1 draw with Clarkson

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – For the second consecutive game, junior Smith Flickinger came through with a late equalizer as the Skidmore College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Clarkson at Wachenheim Field on Tuesday evening.

The Thoroughbreds (5-5-5, 2-2-3 Liberty League) fell behind in the fifth minute on an opportunistic attacking sequence by the Golden Knights (6-4-4, 1-3-3 Liberty League), who finished with a narrow 12-8 edge in shots and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Skidmore battled back in the 80th minute when junior Jed Dougherty flipped the ball to Flickinger for the equalizer and an important conference point.

With the draw, Skidmore is tied with Vassar for fourth place in the playoff race with nine points and two games remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Knights struck in the fifth minute when Zach Ruthfield crossed the ball into the box to find an unmarked Bodie Smith for the goal.
  • Freshman Dante Fierro made saves in the 31st and 39th minutes to keep Skidmore within one at halftime.
  • Senior Colin Goodhines nearly tied the match in the 72nd minute after receiving a lofted ball from sophomore Simon Failla and trying to lob it past the Clarkson keeper, who timed his leap perfectly to deny the goal.
  • In the 80th minute, sophomore Quinn McInerney lofted a cross that deflected to Dougherty, who flipped a creative pass to Flickinger for a high finish into the back of the net.
  • Clarkson nearly found a winner in the closing minutes, but Fierro made a key save in the 88th minute before a point-blank shot by the Golden Knights struck the crossbar in the 89th.
