Thoroughbreds put together strong showing at Vassar Sprint Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Skidmore College men's and women's swimming and diving teams put together strong performances in the pool and on the board at the Vassar Sprint Invitaional on Saturday.

The Thoroughbreds men finished third with a team score of 372 points and won three individual events, while the women took the top spot with a score of 585 points after winning six individual events and both relay events.

MEN'S TOP-SIX FINISHERS
  • The Skidmore 200-medley relay quartet of Brandon Lis, Jaz Liotta, Henry Brien and Thomas Gaughan placed second with a combined time of 1:42.00.
  • In the 500 free, junior Jonah Vaynshtok placed third with a time of 4:59.24 and narrowly beat out sophomore Thomas Gaughan, who touched in fourth at 5:00.14.
  • Freshman Graham Mahoney took second in the 100 back with his time of 57.30. The freshman also placed fourth in the 50 back with his time of 26.90.
  • In the 50 breast, junior Aidan Darling placed sixth with a time of 29.78
  • Junior Henry Brien clocked in fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 56.32. Brien followed up with a fourth-place finish in the 50 fly after clocking in at 25.34.
  • In the 50 free, Gaughan sprinted to a second-place finish with a time of 22.58 seconds.
  • Freshman Jaz Liotta took the win in the 400 IM with the top time of 4:24.09, while senior Brandon Lis placed third at a time of 4:30.51.
  • Competing on the board, senior Tomas Ruiz took first with a top score of 220.50. The senior also placed third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 152.25.
  • In the 100 free, Vaynshtok won the event with the top time of 50.28 seconds, while freshman Luke Splendido placed sixth at 55.64.
  • Lis placed second in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.33, while Darling took fifth at 1:55.82.
  • In the 100 IM, Liotta placed third at a time of 57.34, while Vaynshtok took fourth at 57.88. Freshman Josiah Leese touched in sixth at a time of 59.26.
  • In the 100 breast, Liotta led the way for Skidmore with a third-place time of 1:03.59, while Darling placed fifth at 1:04.86 and Gaughan sixth at 1:05.08.
  • In the 200 free relay, the Skidmore quartet of Vaynshtok, Lis, Mahoney and Brien placed third with a time of 1:33.29.
WOMEN'S TOP-SIX FINISHERS
  • In the 200-medley relay, the Thoroughbreds quartet of Ginny Hunt, Faye Mooney, Gretchen Gwitt and Emelia Lan took first place with a time of 1:50.62.
  • Junior Sabrina Reed earned a runner-up finish in the 500 free after clocking in second place with a time of 5:27.57, while freshman Laurel Halfman touched in third place with a time of 5:30.25.
  • In the 100 back, junior Jae Mason took the event win with the top time of 1:01.84, while senior Gretchen Gwitt placed second with a time of 1:02.10.
  • Junior Faye Mooney placed first in the 50 breast after touching in a time of 31.84 seconds. Senior Ella Palmet placed fourth at a time of 34.94, while freshman Arianna Matthews took fifth at a time of 35.10.
  • In the 100 fly, Skidmore took the top-two spots with junior Kelly Hsu placing first with a time of 1:00.22 and freshman Emelia Lan second at a time of 1:01.30.
  • Gwitt touched in third in the 50 free with a sprint of 25.76, while Mason placed fourth at 25.85.
  • In the 400 IM, senior Ginny Hunt took third with a time of 4:58.53.
  • Competing on the board, sophomore Lila Tulimieri placed second with a score of 193.95, while freshman Abigail Gorczynski took fifth with a score of 165.30. Tulimieri also finished third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 183.45, while Gorczynski took fourth with 161.30.
  • In the 50 fly, Gwitt outpaced the field with the top swim of 27.20 seconds.
  • Hsu won the 100 free with the fastest time of 55.30, while Mooney placed fourth at a time of 56.49.
  • In the 50 back, Hunt won the event after touching in first at 29.20, while Mason clocked in at 29.65 and Palmet in fourth at 29.68 seconds.
  • A trio of Thoroughbreds posted notable performances in the 200 free, with Halfman leading the way in second with a time of 2:04.44, and Matthews touching in third at 2:05.83, while Reed placed fourth at 2:06.09.
  • In the 100 IM, Lan placed second with a time of 1:02.85, while Hsu finished third at a time of 1:03.90.  
  • Mooney placed second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:10.80, while Lan took third at 1:11.78. Also placing in the top-six was senior Holly Staats in fifth with a time of 1:16.16.
  • In the 200 free relay, the Skidmore relay group of Hsu, Hunt, Mason and Matthews took the win with a top combined time of 1:43.78.
MIXED RELAY
  • In the 200 medley mixed relay, the Skidmore quartet of Mahoney, Darling, Hsu and Lan recorded the second-fastest time of 1:47.63.
UP NEXT
The Thoroughbreds will compete in the RPI Dive Invitational next Saturday, with the start time set at noon.
