Thoroughbreds ride electric first quarter to big victory over Garnet Chargers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team hit shots from all over the court in the first half and finished strong for a 71-54 victory over first-place Union in a Liberty League game Tuesday evening.
  • Skidmore went 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) in the first quarter and ended the first half 8-of-11 (72.7 percent) from 3-point range to build a 43-28 halftime lead.
  • With the win, Skidmore is 6-10 overall on the season and 4-5 in the Liberty League. The Thoroughbreds are in sixth with eight games remaining.
  • Union drops to 12-5 and 8-2; now tied with RIT for first.
  • Stella Criniti nearly matched the visitors' entire team in the opening quarter. She hit on all three of her shots in the period, including two from downtown, to score eight out of Skidmore's 27 points. Sophia Martinez also drilled both of her triples. Criniti finished the game with 11 points off the bench.
  • Claudia Schneider registered her first double-double of the year. She finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals.
  • Ruby Krop had six points to go along with five blocks and three assists.
  • Madison Meyer, who scored a team high 13 points, also had three steals with a pair of assists.
  • Grace Ardito scored 13 points to lead the way for the guests with five boards. Jelena Perovic scored 10 in the effort for Union.
  • Union turned the ball over nine times in the first quarter, but settled down in the second and used an 8-0 run to win the frame and trim a once 20-point Skidmore lead to 15 at the break.
  • The visitors continued to inch forward in the third and briefly pulled to within 10 before Skidmore finished the period going 4-for-4 at the free-throw line and led comfortably the rest of the way.
  • The Thoroughbreds continued to protect the lead in the fourth by shooting 63.6 percent (7-of-11) overall for the 71-54 final.
  • Skidmore ended the night at 50.0 percent shooting (26-of-52) from the field and 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from 3-point range.
  • The Garnet Chargers were limited to 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the field and 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from range.
  • The win stretches Skidmore's home winning streak against Union to six. The Thoroughbreds have bested the Garnet Chargers in seven out of the last eight meetings since the start of the 2022-23 season.
