Skidmore rookies highlight strong week of Liberty League awards

TROY, N.Y. – Three first-year Skidmore College student-athletes highlight a group of eight recognized Monday by the Liberty League. Ginevra Muratori was named the Liberty League Women's Tennis Singles Performer of the Week, while her doubles partner Amelie Gonzalez was selected as the Rookie of the Week. David Zampese earned Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week honors, while five others earned mention on the Honor Roll.

Representing Skidmore on the Honor Roll was Erin Ohlenbusch (field hockey), Dylan Moore (men's soccer), Abby Lewis and Hazel Aiello (women's soccer), and Maya Stolarz (volleyball).

Ginevra Muratori (Fy., Como, Italy) – Liberty League Women's Tennis Singles Performer of the Week / Doubles Honor Roll
Muratori steamrolled through the ITA Northeast Regional Singles Championship over the weekend, winning six matches without dropping a set, including wins over the No. 1 and 2 seeded players. In Sunday's semifinal, she beat RPI's Kaavita Kannan 6-1, 6-0, before another comfortable victory (6-4, 6-2) over NYU's Victoria Wang in the championship match. Muratori also reached the finals in the doubles bracket to qualify for the ITA Cup in both disciplines and earn automatic All-America honors.

Amelie Gonzalez (Fr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) – Liberty League Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week / Doubles Honor Roll
Gonzalez excelled in both singles and doubles over the weekend at the Skidmore-hosted ITA Northeast Regionals. In doubles, along with partner Ginevra Muratori, she made it to the final and qualified for next month's ITA Cup by winning four matches in a row over teams from TCNJ, Rensselaer, Vassar, and NYU. Gonzalez also won a thrilling first-round singles match over her opponent from Hamilton.

David Zampese (#30, Fy., GK, Marblehead, Massachusetts) – Liberty League Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Zampese was called into action on Saturday in the ninth minute to fill the goal for Skidmore. The first-year answered with four big saves turning in Skidmore's first shutout since opening day as the Thoroughbreds defeated visiting St. Lawrence 2-0. The win marked Zampese's first victory in his first action of his young career.

Erin Ohlenbusch (#20, Jr., M, North Conway, New Hampshire) – Liberty League Field Hockey Honor Roll
Ohlenbusch played a dominant two-way midfield on Saturday for the Thoroughbreds. She scored the first goal, which served as the game winner, and then played a pivotal role defensively (including eight penalty corner stops) as Skidmore shut out St. Lawrence on the road. The junior midfielder also logged 49 minutes of impact play on Tuesday against top-ranked Middlebury.

Dylan Moore (#16, So., F, Floral Park, New York) – Liberty League Men's Soccer Honor Roll
Moore scored his second goal of the year on Saturday afternoon shortly after Skidmore took a 1-0 lead against St. Lawrence to double the lead on the way to a 2-0 win and the program's first victory over the Saints since 2016.

Abby Lewis (#20, Jr., F, East Greenwich, Rhode Island) – Liberty League Women's Soccer Honor Roll
Lewis scored a goal in each game – both game winners - last week as the Thoroughbreds opened with a pair of wins in conference. She scored in the 17th minute on Wednesday to make it 2-0 on the way to Skidmore's 3-1 victory over Clarkson in the league opener. Then, she found the back of the net for the third game in a row on Saturday to break a 1-1 tie in the 80th minute against St. Lawrence on the road.

Hazel Aiello (#14, Jr., D, Montclair, New Jersey) – Liberty League Women's Soccer Honor Roll
Aiello pitched in offensively with a goal and an assist on Saturday in Skidmore's 2-1 road victory at St. Lawrence. Defensively, the junior back logged 150 total minutes across the two Skidmore league wins last week as the Thoroughbreds surrendered just a goal in each game to move to 2-0 in the Liberty League.

Maya Stolarz (#11, Sr., RS, New York, New York) – Liberty League Women's Volleyball Honor Roll
In three matches for Skidmore last week, Stolarz averaged 2.50 kills per set with 0.60 digs and 0.30 blocks. The highlight of the week for the senior right side came on Saturday, when she had 13 kills and a .379 attack percentage in a Thoroughbred sweep at RIT. She hit .195 for the week with three blocks and 27.0 total points.
