Skidmore athletes win four Liberty League awards; eight Thoroughbreds recognized

TROY, N.Y. – Four Skidmore College student-athletes won Liberty League weekly awards for the week ending Sept. 21 and eight total Thoroughbreds earned recognition. Ege Topbas was selected as the Liberty League Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week, and he also won the Liberty League Doubles Team of the Week award with Kyle Lundberg. Additionally, Chloe Heitman (volleyball) and Jacob Humienny (men's soccer) were both named Rookie of the Week in their respective sports.

Additionally, Ella Costa and Gianna DiGioacchino (field hockey), Dylan Moore (men's soccer), and Abby Lewis (women's soccer) were recognized on the Honor Roll.

Ege Topbas (Fy., Istanbul, Turkey) – Liberty League Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Topbas, in addition to winning three times in the A Flight Doubles bracket at the Middlebury Invitational to reach the tournament final, won his first-round match in the B Flight Singles draw to reach the quarterfinals, where he was edged in a tight match that included a first-set tiebreak. Overall, he went 4-2 for the weekend.

Kyle Lundberg/Ege Topbas – Liberty League Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Lundberg and Topbas won three matches together over the weekend to advance to the A Flight Doubles Final at the Middlebury Invitational. They got through pairs from Bates (8-3), Hamilton (8-7[7-2]), and Bradeis (8-6) to reach the championship match before ultimately falling to a squad from Middlebury.

Chloe Heitman (#9, Fy., OH, Acton, Massachusetts) – Liberty League Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Heitman led the way for the Thoroughbreds in a Saturday sweep over Plattsburgh and Manhattanville. The rookie outside totaled 24 kills (3.43/set) with 2.57 digs per set and 25.5 total points. She went for a double-double in the sweep of Plattsburgh with 11 kills and 12 digs before adding 13 more kills in a four-set win over Manhattanville. Heitmnan finished the day with a .465 hitting percentage and also had three block assists.

Jacob Humienny (#9, Fy., M, Farmington, Connecticut) – Liberty League Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
In Skidmore's only game last week, a 2-1 road win at WPI, Humienny scored his first-career goal on a highlight-reel play to give the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead over the Engineers in the 18th minute. A consistent offensive threat, the first-year produced a game-high four shots with a pair on frame in 75 minutes of action in the victory.

Ella Costa (#5, So., M, Gloucester, Massachusetts) – Liberty League Field Hockey Honor Roll
Costa had two goals and an assist in a 1-1 week for the Thoroughbreds for five points. The sophomore scored once and assisted once Tuesday in a 4-0 win at Utica before adding another goal in Friday's road game at Castleton. She also finished with six shots and five shots on goal for the week.

Gianna DiGioacchino (#4, Jr., D, Cranbury, New Jersey) – Liberty League Field Hockey Honor Roll
DiGioacchino played a huge role on both ends of the field for the Thoroughbreds last week. Offensively, the junior scored in both games and finished with five shots. On the defensive end, she helped lead Skidmore to a shutout over Utica as the team successfully defended 10-of-11 penalty corners across the two contests.

Dylan Moore (#16, So., F, Floral Park, New York) – Liberty League Men's Soccer Honor Roll
Moore had a hand in both Skidmore goals last week at WPI. He assisted in a sparkling tic-tac-toe tally that gave the Thoroughbreds the lead in the 17th minute. Then, in the 83rd minute, the sophomore connected for his first collegiate goal, which served as the game winner, as Skidmore topped WPI 2-1.

Abby Lewis (#20, Jr., F, East Greenwich, Rhode Island) – Liberty League Women's Soccer Honor Roll
Lewis scored her team-leading third goal of the season on Saturday to open the scoring to ultimately give the Thoroughbreds a 2-1 road victory at Gordon. Her strike in the 23rd minute capped a stretch of offensive pressure from the Thoroughbreds against the defending CNE champs. Skidmore scored again early in the second half before coming away with the win.
