Skidmore eliminated by Vassar in Liberty League Semifinal

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team's Liberty League championship hopes came to an end Friday night as the Thoroughbreds fell 67-51 to Vassar College in the semifinal round.

  • Skidmore (15-12), making its third consecutive appearance in the semifinals, held a two-point halftime lead but could not hold off second-seeded Vassar (20-6), which used a strong second-half performance to secure a spot in Sunday's Liberty League final against top-seeded Ithaca.
  • The Thoroughbreds took a 28-26 lead into the break after a solid second quarter, but Vassar responded with a dominant 20-11 third quarter to pull ahead for good.
  • The hosts landed the first punch going up 14-7 in the first quarter until 13 unanswered points, including seven from Sophia Martinez, put the visitors up six three minutes into the second quarter.
  • Vassar answered with an 8-2 run to pull even. Then, Skidmore got six in a row but settled for a two-point lead after the Brewers scored the final two buckets of the half in the final minute.
  • After the strong third period, the Brewers continued to apply pressure in the fourth, outscoring Skidmore 21-12 to seal the victory.
  • Sarah Chambers led Skidmore with 10 points and five rebounds, while Cassie Davidson and Martinez each added eight points.
  • Claudia Schneider grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
  • For Vassar, Tova Gelb had a game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds, while Julia Harvey contributed 20 points.
  • The Brewers shot 41.3 percent from the field and hit seven three-pointers, while Skidmore struggled from deep, going 1-for-10 from beyond the arc.
  • Both teams scored 34 points in the paint while Vassar narrowly edged Skidmore in points off turnovers (12-11), second-chance points (12-9), and fast-break points (6-3).
  • The Skidmore bench outscored Vassar's 21-0. The Brewers used just a seven-player rotation.
  • This was the third year in a row that Skidmore and Vassar met in the playoffs. Vassar has won the last two since Skidmore's semifinal win in 2023.
