Thoroughbreds secure home court with 61-55 win over St. Lawrence

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team captured the season sweep over St. Lawrence University on Friday evening with a 61-55 victory over the visiting Saints at the Williamson Sports Center. The victory secures Skidmore a home playoff game in next week's Liberty League Tournament.
  • The Thoroughbreds 13-11 (11-6 Liberty League) can finish no worse than fourth in the league, pending Saturday's outcomes, and will host either St. Lawrence or Union in a playoff game on Tuesday.
  • The six playoff teams are determined, with seeding on the line in the last game across the league on Saturday.
  • Cassie Davidson led the way in the penultimate game of the season for the Thoroughbreds. She scored 18 points with four steals.
  • Sarah Chambers, Madison Meyer, and Emmy Plage all scored eight. Plage registered a game-high 10 rebounds and three blocks, while Meyer dished out three assists and had four steals.
  • Becca Horger set a career mark with seven steals. Skidmore's press forced 20 SLU turnovers with 16 steals for the Thoroughbreds as a team. Horger scored six.
  • Elizabeth Flynn had a double-double for the Saints with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Norah Niesz and Mason Baker-Schlendering both scored 10 in the effort for the visitors.
  • Both teams shot in the low 30s in the first quarter before the Thoroughbreds pulled away in the second period by shooting 52.9 percent (9-of-17) and scoring 20 points despite not attempting a 3-point attempt. The Thoroughbreds had a 36-25 lead at the half thanks to a 10-point unanswered run.
  • Skidmore extended the lead to as many as 16 in the third quarter and held the Saints to seven in the period to lead by 14 after 30 minutes.
  • The Saints used their best scoring run of eight to kick off a hot fourth quarter in which the visitors got to and stayed within single digits.
  • Skidmore held off the charging Saints with a perfect 7-for-7 mark at the free-throw line in the fourth. The Thoroughbreds shot 86.7 percent (13-of-15) as a team overall.
