SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – First-year men's tennis standout
Ege Topbas was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week for the second time this fall as announced on Monday. Additionally, eight other Skidmore student-athletes were selected to the Honor Roll:
Gianna DiGioacchino,
Erin Ohlenbusch (field hockey), Patrick McLaughlin (golf),
Connor Mansfield,
Rowan McLear (men's soccer),
Olivia Chandler,
Madison Hallet (women's soccer), and
Natalie Pedersen (volleyball).
Ege Topbas (Fy., Istanbul, Turkey) – Liberty League Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Topbas made a run to the semifinal round of the ITA Northeast Regionals over the weekend, with singles victories over opponents from Hobart, Hamilton, Rochester, and Vassar. His only loss was to eventual champion Tarun Korwar of Hamilton – the No. 2 seed in the draw.
Gianna DiGioacchino (#4, Jr., D, Cranbury, New Jersey) - Liberty League Field Hockey Honor Roll
DiGioacchino scored the game-winning goal on a corner in double overtime on Sunday to give Skidmore a 2-1 comeback win over William Smith. Her third goal of the year completed Skidmore's comeback after the Thoroughbreds tied the game late in regulation. Defensively, DiGioacchino helped anchor a unit that surrendered just five goals across the three games including two ranked opponents while Skidmore defended 50 penalty corners.
Patrick McLaughlin (So., Dalton, Massachusetts) – Wahconah Regional
McLaughlin finished tied for second, and was tied as the top Liberty League finisher, at the RPI Invitational at Shaker Ridge Country Club. After an opening round 75, McLaughlin shot a 1-under 70 in Monday's second round with a pair of birdies and 15 pars. His 28 pars for the tournament led the field.
Erin Ohlenbusch (#20, Jr., M, North Conway, New Hampshire) – Liberty League Field Hockey Honor Roll
Ohlenbusch earned the assist on both goals on Sunday as Skidmore came back to shock William Smith by scoring the tying goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation and then winning, 2-1, in double overtime. In three games last week, Ohlenbusch played 213-of-215 (99 percent) minutes with huge contributions on both sides of the field against two ranked opponents in Hamilton (#10) and Rochester (#22).
Connor Mansfield (#22, Sr., F/D, Portland, Oregon) – Liberty League Men's Soccer Honor Roll
Mansfield scored the lone goal of the game on Saturday to lift the Thoroughbreds to a 1-0 road win at No. 19 Ithaca. His 57
th-minute goal, the second of the year for the senior, finally broke the scoreless tie and Skidmore held strong defensively to shut out the Bombers and stay unbeaten in league play.
Rowan McLear (0, So., GK, Newton, Massachusetts) – Liberty League Men's Soccer Honor Roll
McLear did not allow a goal in either game he played last week in goal for the Thoroughbreds. On Tuesday against Castleton, he played a clean second half with one save to finish a combined shutout in a 3-0 Thoroughbred victory. Then, on Saturday at No. 19 Ithaca, the sophomore made two saves on the way to the shutout and 1-0 Skidmore win over the Bombers to remain unbeaten in league play.
Olivia Chandler (#8, So., M/D, Simsbury, Connecticut) – Liberty League Women's Soccer Honor Roll
Chandler logged 76 minutes on the pitch on Saturday against Ithaca playing a key defensive role, and also set up the Thoroughbred goal with a perfect pass to pick up her first point of the year, as Skidmore and Ithaca tied at one to keep the Thoroughbreds unbeaten in league play.
Madison Hallet (#23, Sr., M/F, Burlington, Connecticut) – Liberty League Women's Soccer Honor Roll
Hallet scored her first goal of the season at the 15-minute mark on Saturday afternoon as the Thoroughbreds eventually tied visiting Ithaca, 1-1, to stay unbeaten (2-0-1) in Liberty League play. Her goal gave Skidmore the early lead before the Bombers tied the contest in the second half eventually ending in a draw.
Natalie Pedersen (#7, So, OH, Rochester, New York) - Liberty League Volleyball Honor Roll
Pedersen had a career day on Saturday against Union in Skidmore's only match of the week. The sophomore finished with 21 kills (5.25/set) marking the first Skidmore performance of 20+ kills in a four-set match in nearly a decade. She also finished with four digs and an assist totaling 21.0 points to lead all players in the tightly-contested match with the Garnet Chargers.
