Women’s team dominates as Skidmore split weekend finale against Clarkson

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up a strong season-opening weekend in the pool by splitting decisions against Clarkson at the Williamson Sports Center pool on Saturday afternoon.

The women's team concluded a perfect weekend by winning 14 of 16 events competed in, including all 14 swimming events, to cruise past the Golden Knights 219-76. On the men's side, the Thoroughbreds won six events, including three from sophomore Thomas Gaughan, but fell by a final score of 115.5-172.5 to finish the weekend with a 1-1 record.

MEN'S EVENT WINNERS
  • Junior Jonah Vaynshtok secured the event victory in the 200 free after touching in first at 1:49.79.
  • In the 200 fly, Gaughan finished first after clocking in at 2:06.18. The sophomore continued his strong day by winning the 100 free with a top time of 49.54, and out touching Clarkson's second place finisher by three-tenths.
  • Gaughan rounded out a hat trick of individual event victories in the 200 IM after beating out second place by nearly a second with his time of 2:03.87.
  • The 50 free saw senior Brendan Lu tie with Clarkson's Gavin Struhler at the top time of 21.99.
  • In the 200 breast, freshman Jaz Liotta took the win after securing the fastest time of 2:17.24.
WOMEN'S EVENT WINNERS
  • In the 200-medley relay, the quartet of Emelia Lan, Faye Mooney, Lydia Walker and Gretchen Gwitt finished first with the top time of 1:53.87.
  • Freshman Arianna Matthews clocked the fastest time in the 1000 free after touching in at 11:29.44.
  • In the 200 free, junior Jae Mason took down the field with their top time of 2:03.51. The junior followed up with a winning time of 2:15.39 in the 200 back.
  • In the 100 back, freshman Emelia Lan took her first individual event win of the meet with a top time of exactly 1:04.00. The freshman also cruised to the win in the 200 breast after touching in at 2:36.05.
  • Junior Faye Mooney won the 100 breast after cruising to a top-place time of 1:09.89.
  • In the 200 fly, junior Sabrina Reed took the win with her top time of 2:21.35. The junior followed up with a top time of 5:25.70 in the 500 free.
  • In the 50 free, senior Gretchen Gwitt outpaced the field with a top sprint of 25.52 for the win. The senior also won the 100 fly with her time of 1:00.38.
  • Junior Kelly Hsu won the 100 free after touching in first at a time of 54.27. She followed up with the fastest 200 IM time of 2:18.31.
  • Closing out the meet in the 200 free relay, the Skidmore group of Madelynn Booth, Ari Matthews, Laurel Halfman and Ava Stadler took the win after touching in at a combined time of 1:46.99.

The Thoroughbreds will take on Union in the road opener at 1 PM next Saturday.
