Skidmore Competes at the 60th Head of the Charles

BOSTON, MA — The Skidmore College men's and women's rowing teams competed this past weekend at the 60th Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, the world's largest three-day regatta. Skidmore entered two boats: the men's collegiate 4+ and the women's collegiate 8+.

MEN'S COLLEGIATE 4+
The men's collegiate four raced Sunday at 1:19 p.m., starting fourth in the event. The crew included senior captain Grant Steinberger, Thomas du Four, and Sam van Adrichem Boogaert (all returners from last year's fifth-place boat), joined by junior Hayden Harlow and sophomore Will Landro.
  • Riverside Boathouse (first check): 11th place
  • Weld Boathouse (midpoint): moved up to 6th place
  • Final check: in 5th place, ultimately finished 6th with a time of 16:29.987, just over 1.5 seconds behind 5th.
The top five in the event were Division I programs: Jacksonville University, Stetson University, Florida Institute of Technology, Texas, and UCLA. The next Division III entry was Trinity College, finishing 16th.

WOMEN'S COLLEGIATE 8+
The women's varsity eight raced at 2:59 p.m. Senior captains Norah Jankey and Camilla Johnson and junior Britta Arvold returned from last year's top varsity boat. Seniors Madison Lofmark, Charlotte Taylor, and Harper Staton-Todaro, along with sophomores Brie Chirco, Ava Holthoff, and Grady Vermilye rounded out the lineup.

The Thoroughbreds held 26th place at each of the four checkmarks, finishing 26th in a field of 37. The top three crews in the event were Tufts A, Williams, and Tufts B.

COACH'S COMMENTS

"Racing at the highest level is always going to be hard," said head coach Emanuel Valentin. "For the men's 4+, the margins between fourth and eighth were just over seven seconds — as easily as we could have been fourth, we could have been eighth. The smallest margins make the difference at this level. As for the women, a late injury forced a lineup change and we only had three days to practice in the new configuration. The athletes were ready for the challenge; it just wasn't our day. We'll regroup and refocus with our eyes on Head of the Fish next weekend."

The team will conclude the fall season this Saturday with the Head of the Fish, hosted at Fish Creek.
