Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second half Skidmore comeback falls just short against No. 22 Hobart

GENEVA, NY – A valiant comeback effort from the Skidmore College men's soccer team fell just short, as a potential equalizer in the final seconds was waved off for a foul call, sealing a 2-1 road loss against No. 22 Hobart on Saturday afternoon.

Facing a steep two-goal deficit after the Statesmen (10-0-2, 5-0-1 Liberty League) scored in quick succession within a two-minute span early in the second half, the Thoroughbreds (6-2-3, 2-1-1 Liberty League) saw life when junior Colin Goodhines scored a 66th minute goal to cut the deficit in half. With just ten seconds left in the game, Skidmore appeared to score the would-be equalizer on a 50-50 ball, but was unfortunately waved off for a holding foul call to end the comeback bid.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Thoroughbreds nearly struck first in the fourth minute when a free kick attempt from just outside the box found senior Tobias Catizone, who almost headed the ball past the goalie.
  • In the 23rd minute, Skidmore avoided an early deficit after freshman Matthew Rubin made a terrific team save to deny a shot from Hobart's Steven Pickering.
  • Coming out of intermission, the Statesmen broke the deadlock in the 57th minute when La Zai Outerbridge scored on a rebound off an initial shot from Will Slayton in transition.
  • The second score came just two minutes later, in the 59th, when an unmarked Griffin Coutts buried a one-bounce shot past a diving effort from goalie Rowan McLear to put Hobart up 2-0.
  • Goodhines quickly sliced the deficit in half in the 66th minute upon receiving the entry from freshman Simon Failla before making a move around one Statesmen defender and drilling the ball past the Hobart goalie's reach for the goal.
  • With ten seconds remaining, Skidmore had one final attacking chance as freshman Quinn McInerney delivered a pinpoint pass into the box to find senior Connor Mansfield for the would-be equalizer, but the goal was waved off for a holding foul prior to the shot.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Goodhine's goal marks his third on the season and 13th as a Thoroughbred.
