Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

First-half defense, late success at line, fuels Thoroughbreds to victory over Union

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team surrendered just 20 points in the first half paving the way for a tight 76-72 win over visiting Union College on Friday night.
  • After coughing up just nine points in the first quarter, Skidmore (8-10, 6-5 Liberty League) allowed 11 in the second for a 34-20 halftime lead.
  • The visiting Garnet Chargers stormed in the second half, outscoring Skidmore in both periods, but the Thoroughbreds were strong enough at the free-throw line, making nine in the final minute, to stave off four made Union (11-7, 8-3 Liberty League) 3-pointers over that same span to preserve the lead.
  • The win keeps Skidmore on pace in the conference in a tie for fifth still with seven games to go. Five of them are at home. Union is a half-game behind RIT for third.
  • Skidmore had three players combine for 54 of its 76 points. Cassie Davidson led Skidmore players with 19 points. Sarah Chambers' all-around performance featured 18 points with five rebounds and four blocks. She was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
  • Madison Meyer finished with 17 points and six assists. She scored seven at the free-throw line.
  • Claudia Schneider rounded out the four Thoroughbreds in double figures. She dropped 13 with a team-high eight boards.
  • Jenna Forman had 29 points and seven rebounds to lead the Garnet Chargers.
  • Jelena Perovic had 11 and five assists.
  • Both teams got off to slow starts from the field, resulting in sub-30 percent shooting percentages for both in the first quarter.
  • The Thoroughbreds used a nine-point unanswered burst to build their largest lead at 16 near the end of the half.
  • Union picked up the pace throughout the second half, shooting 55.6 percent, to claw back into it.
  • Skidmore shot 78.6 percent (11-for-14) in the fourth at the free-throw line to stall the Garnet Charger comeback.
  • Union never had the lead in the game, despite controlling the paint, 32-14, and finishing with a 24-5 edge in bench points.
  • Skidmore turned 17 Union turnovers into 14 points while turning it over 11 times resulting in eight Garnet Charger points.
  • The Skidmore win secures the season split with Union after the Garnet Chargers won 74-57 three weeks ago in Schenectady. Skidmore had won the previous four in the series.
