Thoroughbreds head to Amherst to make 17th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance

INDIANAPOLIS – The Skidmore college women's tennis team, after winning the Liberty League title for the 13th consecutive year, will compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament that begins Friday. The Thoroughbreds will head to the Amherst Regional and start play with the first round on Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m. against CUNYAC champion Baruch College. The winner will play host Amherst on Saturday morning. The regional final will be on Sunday.
 
THE TEAMS:
Skidmore College (12-5)
  • This will be Skidmore's 17th straight and 27th overall NCAA Tournament appearance. Skidmore won the 1998 NCAA Championship. This season's team is ranked 32nd nationally and beat #35 Vassar 5-3 to win its 13th straight Liberty League Tournament. The Thoroughbreds are also ranked 10th in the ITA Northeast and second in the NCAA Region II.
  • Konika Dhull is the seventh-ranked singles player in the region, and the doubles team of Dhull and Grace Truong is ranked third regionally.
  • After earning a first-round bye last year, Skidmore beat Drew, 5-1, before losing to host Middlebury in the regional final.
  • Two years ago, in the same draw, the Thoroughbreds blanked Baruch before being eliminated by Amherst.
 
Baruch College (12-3)
  • Baruch won the CUNYAC Tournament in the fall with wins over Lehman and Hunter. The Bearcats are 0-2 in spring dual matches.
  • Baruch went unbeaten in CUNYAC play. The team is unranked.
 
Amherst College (14-6)
  • The Mammoths are an at-large invite to the tournament. The team is ranked eighth nationally and second in the Northeast, and fifth in NCAA Region I. Amherst lost to #4 Wesleyan in the NESCAC Championship after wins over Bowdoin and Middlebury.
  • The Mammoths have a National Championship in 1999and will be making their 28th NCAA Tournament appearance.
  • Amherst has a pair of Northeast ranked singles players (Delila Friedman-7, Amy Cui-14) and doubles teams (Friedman/Dounchis-4, Cui/Hart-6).
 
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (15-2)
  • Champions of the SCIAC, Pomona-Pitzer is ranked second in the nation and fourth in the West Region. The Sagehens defeated top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to earn the conference's automatic qualifier. It was the team's first conference title in over a decade.
  • Pomona-Pitzer has one National Championship in 1992.
  • In the West, the Sagehens have four ranked singles players (Angie Zhou-1, Lauren Rha-4, Nyakiriri Kanefu-7, Marissa Markey-13) and all three of it's doubles pairs are in the top-seven.
  • Zhou is the top-ranked singles player in the nation according to ITA. Rha is eighth, Kanefu is 21st.
 
UMass Boston (12-2)
  • The Beacons won the Little East Conference title to earn its NCAA bid. UMass Boston is unranked.
 
Drew University (12-6)
  • Drew won the Landmark Conference for the third year in a row with wins over Goucher and Moravian. It is Drew's fourth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Rangers are unranked.
