Thoroughbreds go toe to toe with first-place Rochester

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team plated host to first-place University of Rochester on Friday afternoon. Rochester coasted after scoring six in the first inning of game one before eking out a 5-3 decision in the nightcap.

Rochester 6, Skidmore 0
  • In the briskly played opener, the Yellowjackets jumped onto the scene with each of the game's six runs all in the top of the first.
  • Bailey Nicholoff drove in the first run with a bases-loaded walk before the big blow came from Molly Mason. A three-run, bases-clearing triple made it 4-0 Rochester. She scored two batters later on a Julianna Lyons double. Lyons completed the scoring by touching home on a Savannah Nowak single.
  • Jessica Nachamie had Skidmore's first hit in the third, but her leadoff single was erased by an inning-ending double play.
  • Rochester pitcher Molly Broccolo finished facing the minimum when Skidmore's other hit, a Grace O'Connell single in the seventh, was followed up immediately with another double play.
  • Skidmore (6-20, 0-6 Liberty League) starter Hailey Clarke served up nothing the rest of the way. She worked around four more hits and a pair of walks but did not allow another run to score. She recorded two strikeouts.

Rochester 5, Skidmore 3
  • Both teams scored single runs in the second before Skidmore fell behind again when Rochester played three in the fourth.
  • The Thoroughbreds got one back in the fourth and after plating a run, had the tying run at third with one out in the sixth. An unsuccessful squeeze play led to the second out. Rochester added an insurance tally in the seventh.
  • After the Yellowjackets got the lead, Skidmore loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second and tied it up on an O'Connell single to centerfield. The bases were left stranded after a foul out and strikeout ended it.
  • Rochester scored a pair of unearned runs as part of its three-run fourth.
  • Bernie Berner brought in Skidmore's second run with a two-out infield single in the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Elle Harrison reached on her third bunt single of the game before consecutive singles from O'Connell and Berner brought her around for the third run.
  • Rochester (20-6, 7-1 Liberty League) closed it out with one more unearned run in the seventh.
  • Mallory Allen surrendered four runs, two earned, over four innings for Skidmore. She walked one and struck out two. Natalie Mayne did not allow an earned run over three innings of relief.
  • Lauren Keys worked around 10 Skidmore hits to get the win in the circle for the visitors. Broccolo pitched the final 1.2 innings for the save.
NEXT UP: Skidmore will host RIT on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. as the team will honor its seniors.
