Skidmore drops pair at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Skidmore College softball team made an early morning trip to Union College, where the Thoroughbreds dropped a pair of Liberty League games to the Garnet Chargers, 7-2 and 9-4. Union, which has now won three straight, is 3-13 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Skidmore drops to 4-16 and 0-4.

Union 7, Skidmore 2

  • First pitch was moved up to 10:30 a.m. due to a weather forecast of rain.
  • Union jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, including a two-run home run from Ellie Wintringer.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored their first run in the top of the second when Erin Gibbons had a sacrifice fly to left field. Mallory Allen, who finished the game having gone 3 for 3, had doubled and moved to third on a Bernie Berner single.
  • The Garnet Chargers answered with single runs in the second and third innings for a 5-1 lead.
  • Runs in the fifth and sixth made it 7-1 before Skidmore added one in the seventh.
  • A double to right center by Rachel Monser scored Grace O'Connell, who had singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
  • O'Connell, the center fielder, and Monser, the right fielder, both had two hits.
  • Wintringer led Union offensively, going 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, one run and three RBI.
  • Autumn Duff went 7.0 innings in the win, while the Thoroughbreds used two pitchers. Starter Hailey Clarke took the loss.

Union 9, Skidmore 4

  • After spotting Union five runs in the first two innings - four of which were unearned - the Thoroughbreds cut their deficit with two unearned runs of their own in the third.
  • Elle Harrison, who opened the frame with a walk, came around on an error.
  • Grace O'Connell, who reached on the error and stole second, was plated by a single from Mallory Allen.
