SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Skidmore College softball team made an early morning trip to Union College, where the Thoroughbreds dropped a pair of Liberty League games to the Garnet Chargers, 7-2 and 9-4. Union, which has now won three straight, is 3-13 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Skidmore drops to 4-16 and 0-4.
Union 7, Skidmore 2
- First pitch was moved up to 10:30 a.m. due to a weather forecast of rain.
- Union jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, including a two-run home run from Ellie Wintringer.
- The Thoroughbreds scored their first run in the top of the second when Erin Gibbons had a sacrifice fly to left field. Mallory Allen, who finished the game having gone 3 for 3, had doubled and moved to third on a Bernie Berner single.
- The Garnet Chargers answered with single runs in the second and third innings for a 5-1 lead.
- Runs in the fifth and sixth made it 7-1 before Skidmore added one in the seventh.
- A double to right center by Rachel Monser scored Grace O'Connell, who had singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
- O'Connell, the center fielder, and Monser, the right fielder, both had two hits.
- Wintringer led Union offensively, going 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, one run and three RBI.
- Autumn Duff went 7.0 innings in the win, while the Thoroughbreds used two pitchers. Starter Hailey Clarke took the loss.
Union 9, Skidmore 4
- After spotting Union five runs in the first two innings - four of which were unearned - the Thoroughbreds cut their deficit with two unearned runs of their own in the third.
- Elle Harrison, who opened the frame with a walk, came around on an error.
- Grace O'Connell, who reached on the error and stole second, was plated by a single from Mallory Allen.
- Three runs from Union in the bottom of the third inning made it 8-3. Three different players knocked in runs in the frame.
- An RBI single by Maddy Ewald put the ninth run on the board for the Garnet Chargers.
- The Thoroughbreds rallied in the seventh inning but could only score twice.Â
- O'Connell singled down the left field line to begin things. She later advanced to second on an error and came around to score on a double to right center from Bernie Berner.Â
- A Madison Bonham pinch hit single scored Allen to make it 9-4 and Caitlyn Dion walked to put two on with two outs.Â
- A popout ended the game.
- O'Connell finished 3 for 4 with two runs. Dion was 2 for 3.
- Union knocked out 14 hits and got a complete game from Melody Kappel.
UP NEXT: Skidmore plays two doubleheaders in the next two days, beginning with a home twinbill against SUNY Oneonta on Monday (3 p.m.). A trip to SUNY Delhi follows on Tuesday (3 p.m.).
