Gwitt breaks backstroke record, five Thoroughbreds win events, to highlight strong final day at Don Richards Invitational

Gretchen Gwitt broke the 100 backstroke record!
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Skidmore College swimming and diving teams made an impressive showing at Saturday's Don Richards Invitational second and third sessions at RIT, highlighted by a school record-breaking performance from Gretchen Gwitt in the 100-yard backstroke and seven different individual wins from five different Thoroughbreds.
 
Gwitt's time of 59.31 seconds broke the previous eight-year-old program record (Erin Donovan – 2016) and headlined a day filled with top finishes across the board.
 
In addition to the record, Skidmore finished the day with individual wins by Ginny Hunt (400-yard individual medley/200-yard backstroke), Ryan Delfico (400-yard individual medley), Gwitt (100-yard fly), Nicolas Sodi (100-yard backstroke/200-yard backstroke), and Sabrina Reed (1650-yard freestyle). The Thoroughbreds tallied a total of 30 top-five results.
 
Skidmore finished second on both the men's and women's sides with final scores of 643 and 771, respectively. Host RIT was on top with both of its teams finishing with over 1,000 points.
 
WOMEN'S EVENTS:
  • 200-Yard Medley Relay: The team of Hunt, Faye Mooney, Gwitt, and Emily Booth placed second with a time of 1:51.32.
  • 400 IM: Hunt took first place (4:52.51), with Katherine Manaresi finishing sixth (5:05.86).
  • 100 Butterfly: Gwitt earned first place (57.85), with Lydia Walker in fifth (1:02.23) and Emily Booth in eighth (1:03.43).
  • 200 Freestyle: Kelly Hsu secured second place (1:57.45), followed by Reed in fourth (2:00.48), MK Booth in 10th (2:04.90), and Julianna Kuznar in 16th (2:07.27).
  • 100 Breaststroke: Mooney placed second (1:08.02), with Manaresi in 11th (1:12.74), Holly Staats in 12th (1:12.85), and Mariama Dabo in 15th (1:14.70).
  • 100 Backstroke: Gwitt's record-breaking swim earned her second place (59.31), with Jae Mason in third (1:01.31), Hunt in fourth (1:01.80), Ella Palmet in 13th (1:04.86), Walker in 15th (1:05.47), and Kuznar and Chloe Kim tying for 16th (1:05.54).
  • 1650 Freestyle: Reed dominated the event with a first-place finish with a margin over 30 seconds (18:02.24), followed by MK Booth in sixth (19:04.17) and Sarah Miller in ninth (19:23.20).
  • 200 Backstroke: Hunt took first place (2:13.03), Mason placed third (2:13.42), and Kuznar came in eighth (2:19.13).
  • 100 Freestyle: Hsu placed third (54.50), Mooney took fourth (54.60), Walker came in 12th (57.09), and Booth finished 14th (57.55).
  • 200 Breaststroke: Manaresi finished sixth (2:36.09), Dabo placed 10th (2:42.01), Staats finished 11th (2:42.10), Emma Bedard placed 12th (2:44.29), and Palmet took 15th (2:48.37).
  • 200 Butterfly: Gwitt finished fourth (2:15.27) with Reed in fifth (2:19.06).
  • 400 Freestyle Relay: The team of Mooney, Walker, Booth, and Hsu placed second (3:42.26).
  • 1-Meter Dive: Sophia May placed fifth with a score of 339.60.
 
MEN'S EVENTS:
  • 200-Yard Medley Relay: The team of Ryan Delfico, Liam Keating, Brendan Lu, and Owen Magoon placed second (1:35.82).
  • 400 IM: Delfico earned first place (4:12.52) with a winning margin just under two seconds.
  • 100 Butterfly: Lu placed sixth (52.02), with Allen Huseinovic in 15th (55.21) and Henry Brien in 16th (56.07).
  • 200 Freestyle: Jonah Vaynshtok placed eighth (1:46.89), followed by Keegan Scharoun in ninth (1:48.25) and Thomas Gaughan in 13th (1:49.37).
  • 100 Breaststroke: Keating placed third (57.66), with Magoon in ninth (1:01.53), Aidan Darling in 13th (1:02.38), Gavin Schiavi in 14th (1:03.90), and David Marcello in 15th (1:03.95).
  • 100 Backstroke: Sodi took first place (51.68), followed by Delfico in second (52.55) and Scharoun in eighth (55.10).
  • 1650 Freestyle: Sodi placed fourth (17:06.17).
  • 200 Backstroke: Sodi claimed first place (1:55.21), Delfico placed third (1:57.38), and Huseinovic came in fifth (1:59.95).
  • 100 Freestyle: Lu placed sixth (47.42), followed by Vaynshtok in 10th (48.65), and Magoon and Schiavi tying for 14th (49.35).
  • 200 Breaststroke: Keating finished fourth (2:10.26).
  • 200 Butterfly: Gaughan placed seventh (1:59.59).
  • 400 Freestyle Relay: The team of Lu, Delfico, Magoon, and Sodi placed second (3:10.11).

  • Skidmore has completed competition for the semester. After the team's annual training trip, the Thoroughbreds pick up competition Jan. 18, at Rensselaer's Kumpf Invitational.
