No. 22 Ithaca pulls past Skidmore late in Liberty League semifinals

ITHACA, NY – The Skidmore College field hockey team put up a valiant defensive stand to contain No. 22 Ithaca well into the third quarter of the game, before eventually conceding a pair of goals to fall 2-0 in the Liberty League Semifinals on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ithaca (14-5) generated the first of eight penalty corners just 1:13 into the match and nearly landed the go-ahead score if not for a terrific defensive save from junior Brooke Golden.
  • Senior goalie Victoria Bodnar made a pair of big defensive saves throughout the rest of the first half, first stopping a shot in the third minute and another in the 24th minute to keep Skidmore (9-12) tied scoreless heading into halftime.
  • In the third quarter, the Thoroughbreds generated its lone penalty corner opportunity in the 37th minute but ultimately couldn't capitalize with a shot attempt.
  • The Bombers responded a couple minutes later, in the 39th, with a corner of their own that resulted in the home team finally breaking through and taking the lead off a score from Natalie Descalso.
  • Looking to respond and score the equalizer in the fourth, the Thoroughbreds got off its lone shot in the 49th minute from senior Beth Yorns that was blocked.
  • In the 58th, Ithaca put the game away for good after Descalso struck once again with the insurance goal to end Skidmore's playoff run.
