LL Semis Preview Fall 2024

Busy semifinal Friday for Thoroughbred teams

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Three Skidmore teams advanced on Tuesday, meaning all three will play for the right to go to their respective conference championships in Friday's semifinal round. Women's soccer will take on Ithaca at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. At the same time, men's soccer is at St. Lawrence in a rematch of the 2022 conference title game. At 4 p.m., field hockey, also at Ithaca, will play the Bombers for the right to go to the championship.

ABOUT SKIDMORE
Skidmore reached the semifinal with a 1-0-win Tuesday night over RIT. Ella Stone scored her conference-leading 13th goal of the season in the 86th minute to break the scoreless tie. The fourth-seeded Thoroughbreds enter at 11-2-3 after finishing the Liberty League slate with a 5-2-2 record. Avery Rogers made four saves on Tuesday to record her eighth shutout of the year. She has not allowed a goal since the Ithaca game on Oct. 19 (301 minutes). Skidmore is currently ranked #27 in the NCAA NPI Rankings.
 
ABOUT ITHACA
The Bombers enter the postseason as the top seed following a 12-2-3 overall record and 7-2 mark in the Liberty League. Ithaca has conceded just seven goals all year long led by goalkeeper Grace Hickley, who leads the league in goals-against average (.428) with 10 shutouts. Offensively, Ithaca is second in the league with 39 goals (2.29/game) led by Sarah Sinnott, who is one of three players in the league with double-digit goals. She has 10. Ava Detorie is tied for the conference lead with nine assists. Ithaca is currently ranked #20 in the NCAA NPI Rankings.
 
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Ithaca defeated Skidmore 2-1 on Oct. 19 in Saratoga Springs. Ally Stanton broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 59th minute for Ithaca. Ashley Downes scored for Skidmore, while Ava Detorie scored for the Bombers. Ithaca leads the all-time series 20-3-6. This is the first Liberty League Tournament meeting between the Thoroughbreds and Bombers.

ABOUT SKIDMORE
It required penalty kicks, but Skidmore advanced to the semifinal after a 4-3 PK decision over visiting Ithaca on Tuesday. Will Devall stopped two shots in the penalty shootout. Nick Jardim, Leo Kachanovsky, Colin Goodhines, and Edo Ferrari converted their kicks for the Thoroughbreds. Skidmore is seeded third and enter with a season record of 6-3-7. Devall is the Liberty League leader (and third in Division III) with an .897 save percentage and eight shutouts. Skidmore has conceded just eight goals all season which is far and away the fewest in the league and its team save percentage of .902 is the best in the nation. Skidmore is currently ranked #129 in the NCAA NPI Rankings.
 
ABOUT ST. LAWRENCE
After losing its first two games, St. Lawrence is unbeaten (8-0-6) ever since. The Saints went 5-0-4 in the Liberty League. Despite their unbeaten conference results, the Saints finished second behind Vassar. St. Lawrence is ranked third in the league in scoring offense (28) and defense (15). Henry Brown has scored 11 times to lead the team and the Liberty League. Max Mogul shares the league lead with six assists. George Charalambous and Devall are tied atop the conference with 4.67 saves per game. St. Lawrence is currently ranked #77 in the NCAA NPI Rankings.
 
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
This year's semifinal is a rematch of the championship game from two years ago, when the Saints won 3-1. Skidmore has defeated SLU just once since 2013. Going back to 2005, St. Lawrence leads the series 20-3-1. Overall, this is the sixth Liberty League Tournament meeting between the Thoroughbreds and Saints. SLU has won each of the previous five (2006, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2022). This is the first-ever semifinal meeting.

ABOUT SKIDMORE
Skidmore, seeded fifth, advanced to the semis after going on the road and beating William Smith 1-0 on Tuesday. Skidmore enters the semifinal with a season record sitting at 9-11. Colby Paul scored in the third quarter and it held as Victoria Bodnar made three saves for her league-leading sixth shutout of the season. Skidmore is tied for second in the league in scoring with 47 goals. CC Wetter leads the team and if fourth in the Liberty League with 12 goals. Paul, not far behind, has eight. Bodnar leads the conference with 142 saves. Skidmore is currently ranked #72 in the NCAA NPI Rankings.
 
ABOUT ITHACA
The Bombers, ranked 22nd nationally, enter the postseason on a seven-game winning streak. Ithaca is 13-5 on the season. Juliana Valli is Ithaca's leading goal scorer with six goals. Natalie Descalso (5g, 6a) leads the bombers in points with 16. Goalkeeper Maeve Clark is 10-4 with a 0.85 goals-against average and a .800 save percentage. Ithaca has the league's best defense having surrendered just 16 goals in 18 games. Ithaca is currently ranked #27 in the NCAA NPI Rankings.
 
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Since 2003, Skidmore is 10-3 against Ithaca, but the Bombers have won the last three including a 2-0 decision just two weeks ago in Ithaca. This will be the first postseason meeting between Skidmore and Ithaca.

Friday's winners will play for conference championships on Sunday. Title games will be on the campus of the highest remaining seed.
