Thoroughbreds dominate Union in home opener

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College swimming and diving teams saw a stellar performance back in the home pool by comfortably defeating Union in the home opener on Saturday afternoon.

The men's team won by a staggering final score of 206-73 after winning 14 events, while the women won by a more modest, but still impressive, margin of 191-102 after having an event winner in 13 events.

"In our first home meet of the season, our team upped their intensity and performed extremely well for early season," said head coach Jill Greenleaf. "With several lifetime bests and strong performances on the boards and the lanes throughout the meet, the team is primed to continue to challenge every opponent!" 

MEN'S EVENT WINNERS
  • In the 200 medley relay, the Skidmore group of Ryan Delfico, Liam Keating, Brendan Lu and Nicolas Sodi touched first in a time of 1:37.41, beating out second by nearly five seconds.
  • Freshman Lachlan Hartshorn won the 1000 free after dominating the field with a time of 10:38.54, which was over 16 seconds quicker than second.
  • In the 200 free, freshman Thomas Gaughan took an event win of his own after clocking in at 1:49.80.
  • Sodi won his first individual event of the meet in the 100 back after touching in at 53.63. The senior followed up by winning the 500 free with his time of 4:55.37.
  • The 100 breast saw Keating touch first by nearly four seconds after clocking in at 59.53. The senior also won the 200 breast with his top time of 2:13.86.
  • Delfico won the 200 fly by cruising to a top time 2:02.78, before following up with a 400 IM victory after touching in at 4:21.46.
  • In the 50 free, Lu outpaced the field with the fastest sprint of 21.90. The junior also won the 100 fly with a time of 53.32.
  • Senior Keegan Scharoun won the 200 back after clocking in at 2:04.08.
  • On the boards, junior Tomas Ruiz won the 3-meter dive after posting the top score of 212.93.
  • Rounding out the meet in the 200 free relay, the Thoroughbreds quartet of Sodi, Jonah Vaynshtok, Keating and Lu came in first with a combined time at 1:29.11.
WOMEN'S EVENT WINNERS
  • Kicking off the meet in the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Ginny Hunt, Faye Mooney, Gretchen Gwitt and Jae Mason touched first with a combined time of 1:54.50.
  • In the 1000 free, sophomore MK Booth bested the field with her top time of 11:45.29.
  • Mason won the 200 free after touching in at 2:07.37. The sophomore also won the 500 free with the top time of 5:41.04.
  • The 100 back saw Gwitt outpace the field with her time of 1:01.69.
  • Sophomore Kelly Hsu won the 200 fly after recording the top time of 2:18.46. Hsu also came out on top in the 100 fly by clocking in at 1:00.29.  
  • Sprinting in the 50 free, Mooney outpaced the competition with the fastest swim of 26.03. The sophomore also won the 100 free with a time of 56.14.
  • In the 200 back, Hunt took the win with a time of 2:16.04.
  • Sophomore Sabrina Reed won the 400 IM after touching in at 5:02.01.
  • On the boards, senior Sophia May won the 1-meter dive after posting the top mark of 198.75.
  • In the 200 free relay, the group of M. Booth, Gwitt, Lydia Walker and Hsu won with their time of 1:44.35.
UP NEXT
Skidmore returns to the pool next Saturday on the road at Vassar. The meet is set for a noon start time.
