Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Thoroughbreds bested by Union on senior day

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Skidmore College field hockey team wrapped out regular season league play with a 4-1 loss to Union on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the loss, the Thoroughbreds (8-10, 2-5 Liberty League) will still move on to the Liberty League Playoffs after losses suffered by both St. Lawrence and RPI, both of whom also finished 2-5 in league play. Skidmore held the tie-break over both teams as a result of beating William Smith earlier in the year.

Following the game, the program honored the 2024 senior class of Victoria Bodnar, Kayla Hassett, Gillian Maher, Brooke Tunnicliffe, CC Wetter and Beth Yorns with senior day celebrations.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Garnet Chargers (13-4, 6-1 Liberty League) struck first in the 21st minute on a successfully converted penalty corner to give Union the lead heading into halftime.
  • In the early minutes of the third, the road team quickly pulled away after a pair of insurance goals were scored in quick succession in the 32nd and 36th minutes, putting the Thoroughbreds in a tough 3-0 deficit.
  • Looking to mount a comeback, Skidmore came out the final quarter with a quick score from sophomore Erin Ohlenbusch just 70 seconds into the frame. The sophomore's goal came off the rebound of a saved CC Wetter shot attempt on a penalty corner.
  • However, the Garnet Chargers halted the comeback hopes with an immediate response just two minutes later, in the 49th, to ultimately seal the game.
STANDOUT THOROUGHBREDS
  • Ohlenbusch's goal marks the second score of her career
  • Wetter placed both her shot attempts on goal
