Thoroughbreds sweep past St. Lawrence in season opener

CANTON, NY – The Skidmore College swimming and diving teams kicked off the winter season with a near complete sweep of St. Lawrence after securing an event winner in 25 of the 26 combined events in the pool and on the boards Friday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds came out on top 183-22 after sweeping all 13 events on the men's side of competition, while the women's team also cruised past the Saints with a final score of 176-58.

MEN'S EVENT WINNERS
  • In the 200-medley relay, the Skidmore quartet of Nic Sodi, David Marcello, Thomas Gaughan and Brendan Lu finished first with a time of 1:41.70.
  • Following up his relay win, Sodi took his first individual event victory in the 1000 free after touching first at 10:31.42. The three-time Liberty League Champion wrapped up his day with a first-place finish in the 100 free after clocking a 49.71.
  • Senior Keegan Scharoun won the 200 free after touching in at 1:55.09.
  • In the 50 free, Lu handedly secured the win after sprinting to a time of 22.40, which was seven-tenth of a second quicker than second place. The junior also won the 100 fly after clocking in at 54.09 seconds.
  • Senior Liam Keating won the 200 IM after posting the fastest time of 2:06.67.
  • As the lone diver competing in the 3 meter, Tomas Ruiz finished the event with a score of 191.70. Similarly in the 1 meter, Ruiz rounded out the event as the lone diver with a score of 208.20.
  • Winning a pair of individual events, senior Ryan Delfico first came out on top in the 100 back after clocking in at 54.37, before winning the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.93.
  • In the 500 free, junior Brandon Lis finished first with a time of 5:12.06.
  • Rounding out the complete sweep, the Thoroughbreds won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:33.69 posted by the quartet of Gavin Schiavi, Marcello, Keegan Scharoun and Will Quinn.
WOMEN'S EVENT WINNERS
  • The Thoroughbreds got off to a strong start to the meet after winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:52.79 posted by the quartet of Ginny Hunt, Faye Mooney, Gretchen Gwitt and Kelly Hsu.
  • Sophomore Sabrina Reed won the 1000 free by four seconds after touching in at a time of 11:17.67. The sophomore followed up with a distance sweep after also winning the 500 free with a time of 5:34.77.
  • In the 200 free, Hsu won her first of two individual events after clocking in at 1:59.45. The sophomore also won the 100 free with a solid time of 56.99.
  • Gwitt outsprinted the field in the 50 free after posting the fastest time of 25.76. The junior followed up with another event victory in the 100 fly with a time of 1:00.04.
  • The 200 IM saw Hunt come out on top with her time of 2:21.97, before also touching in first in the 100 back with the fastest time of 1:03.15.
  • In the 100 breast, Mooney won the event with a time of 1:11.05.
  • On the board, senior Sophia May won the 1-meter dive after posting a score of 182.70. Freshman Lila Tulimieri finished best in the 3-meter dive with a top score of 139.20.

The Thoroughbreds wrap up their early-season road trip tomorrow by competing against Clarkson at 1 PM.
