Men's Varsity 4+ head of the charles 2024

Men’s varsity 4+ makes the podium at world-famous Head of the Charles Regatta

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Skidmore Men's and Women's Rowing teams participated in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta, held in Boston, Massachusetts. The three-day event, which attracts crews from across the globe—from high school athletes to Olympians—takes place on a 4,702-meter course along the Charles River.

The Women's Collegiate 8+ event saw Skidmore's crew race at 2:44 p.m., finishing 18th out of 34 crews. Sophomore coxswain Hayden Harlow led the boat, with senior captains Maddie Aho and McKenna Otey sitting in the stern pair. Sophomore Delaney Miller, senior captain Molly Sullivan, junior Camilla Johnson, and first-year Ava Holthoff powered the engine room, while sophomore Britta Arvold and first-year Ella Plosky rounded out the bow pair. The crew completed the course in a time of 18:12.

Shortly afterward, Skidmore's Men's Collegiate 4+ entry took to the water, aiming to improve on its 14th-place finish in 2023. Senior coxswain Emma Laquinta directed the boat, with junior Thomas du Four setting the pace in the stroke seat. Junior Grant Steinberger and sophomore Sam van Adrichem Boogaert returned to the crew, while senior captain Ryan Capozucca completed the lineup in the bow seat. The men's 4+ finished an impressive 5th overall in a time of 16:57, earning the highest finish among Division III programs and trailing only Division I crews from La Salle University, UCLA, Stetson University, and the University of San Diego.

Reflecting on the performance, senior captain Ryan Capozucca said, "Medaling at the Charles was a successful first showing of the season. This result will surprise many, but it's no shock to us. This achievement is a testament to the hard work the team put in over the summer, and I'm incredibly proud of the five people in this boat. We'll carry this energy into the Head of the Fish back on the creek next weekend! Go T-Breds!"

Coach Manny also praised the team's effort: "It was a fantastic showing for Skidmore Rowing. I'm incredibly proud of the team—not just for the result but for the dedication and hard work they've put in to get here. Our practices, like when the men's 4+ raced the women's 8+, pushed both crews to their limits. It's that kind of commitment and teamwork that led to today's success. I'm excited to get the whole team back together as we prepare for the Head of the Fish."

Skidmore Rowing will conclude its fall season next weekend with its signature event, the Head of the Fish, on October 26 at Fish Creek.
