Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Thoroughbreds and Cardinals spar to 1-1 draw

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's soccer team completed an unbeaten first weekend of competition with a 1-1 tie against St. John Fisher University on Saturday afternoon.
 
  • Both teams are 1-0-1.
  • Junior Ella Stone scored the goal for Skidmore in the 59th minute. After a corner insert by Kyra Russman-Araya, the ball pinballed to Molly Cunningham, who found Stone on the edge of the 6-yard box for the turnaround left-boot finish.
  • SJFU connected with the equalizer in the 78th minute. Gwen Madden's long pass into the penalty area bounced over the Thoroughbred defender and found Jenn Kirker, who blasted the shot under the bar.
  • Skidmore came away with a 17-13 edge in shots and put 10 shots on goal against five for the visitors.
  • The visitors took each of the final four shots of the game. Rogers turned away a pair of shots in the 83rd minute to keep the match tied.
  • Corner kicks were 5-2 for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds earned a corner kick with just over two minutes remaining, but the Cardinals were able expunge the threat.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Avery Rogers turned aside four shots for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Skidmore was held to one goal thanks to seven Avery Byrnes saves and an additional two team saves by Cardinal defenders.
  • NEXT UP: Skidmore's season opening homestand will continue next weekend with games against SUNY Potsdam and Trinity College Sept. 9-10.
