Thoroughbreds drop pair on day two

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – In a pair of games significantly delayed as a result of recent weather and field conditions, the Skidmore College softball team fell in a pair of contests in day two of its week in Myrtle Beach. The Thoroughbreds lost to Susquehanna University 12-7 and Spalding University 3-1 on Monday.

GAME ONE
  • Susquehanna took control early on with four runs in the top of the first inning on three hits and a walk.
  • Skidmore cut into the lead with one run in the bottom half of the first on an Erin Gibbons infield single.
  • Susquehanna played small ball in the second to add another.
  • The Thoroughbreds made it a two-run game, 5-3, with a pair of runs in the third. Melissa Mathias singled to lead off and scored all the way from first on a throwing error one batter later.
  • The teams traded two-spots in the fourth inning. Mathias drove in Skidmore's second run in the bottom half of the inning on a single through the box.
  • The Susquehanna offense added three in he fifth and two in t he seventh to keep it out of range.
  • Mathias finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. Grace O'Connell was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
  • Carolina Garcia had two hits in three trips and scored twice. She hit a one-out single in the seventh.

GAME 2
  • In a reversal of Skidmore's first two game, the second game on Monday's slate was a pitchers' duel.
  • Meghan Robertson for Skidmore and Erica McMann for Spalding went pitch-for-pitch in the briskly played contest.
  • Spalding broke the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and a runner at second, Dean Wilson doubled down the line in left to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. She scored two batters later on a Karlee Terra single through the middle.
