Skidmore advances to Liberty League Championship with 77-66 win over Vassar

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team will play for the Liberty League Championship after it defeated Vassar College in a semifinal matchup, 77-66. The Thoroughbreds are 21-5 and will travel to Ithaca College for the title game on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
 
  • Skidmore will play for the Liberty League title for the first time since 2018 and fourth time overall. The Thoroughbreds will attempt to win their third championship.
  • With 21 wins, Skidmore has tied its single-season program win record, set in 1995-96 and matched in 2009-10.
  • In the other semifinal game, top-seeded Ithaca defeated RPI 73-39.
  •  Three players, including two off the bench, scored in double figures for Skidmore. Emmy Plage had a career game to lead the way. She scored 15 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting night (2-of-2 at the line). She added six rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
  • Cassie Davidson scored 13 points with a game-high nine rebounds, three steals, and an assist.
  • Kate McCarney came off the bench to score 12 points, five of which from the free-throw line, with three assists, two steals, and a block.
  • Skidmore had five blocks as a team and Vassar had zero. Julia Blanck rejected two shots, and Emilija Jakumaite had one.
  • Amelia Medolla and Maddie Hastings scored nine points each.
  • Vassar was led by Alex Lee with 23 and Eliza Srinivasan with 21. The duo accounted for two-thirds of the Brewer scoring (44-of-66).
  • Skidmore raced out to an early 11-3 lead before Vassar closed the gap promptly with a 7-2 run.
  • The first half remained neck and neck until Skidmore finally broke through with 16 unanswered points in the tail end of the second quarter to take a nine-point lead into the break.
  • Vassar prodded away at Skidmore's lead in the third quarter, dwindling it down to four with 4:13 left. It remained a single-digit Thoroughbred advantage until the 4:43 mark of the fourth quarter, when Srinivasan scored to tie it at 62.
  • Skidmore scored the next four points on a Hastings jumper and a pair of free throws from Davidson to make it 66-62.
  • After Vassar drained two free throws, McCarney put the Thoroughbreds back up by five when she nailed a clutch 3-pointer with 2:05 left.
  • Skidmore finished 6-of-8 at the line down the stretch to keep it out of reach.
  • NEXT: Skidmore will look to earn the Liberty League's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a win over Ithaca on Sunday. Vassar, ranked seventh in the most recent NCAA Regional Rankings, will await a possible at-large selection. Skidmore is ranked sixth in the Region III, while Ithaca is first.
