Late goals propel Herons past Thoroughbreds 3-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—William Smith scored two fourth-quarter goals in a 2:15 span to break open a tie game on the way to a 3-1 win over Skidmore College in Liberty League field hockey action Friday afternoon at Wagner Park. The loss drops the Thoroughbreds to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Herons are 9-6 and 4-2.
 
  • The evenly played contest was tied 0-0 at the half.
  • William Smith broke through when Kate Barilla scored off a well-placed pass from Mary Kate Breward off a corner at 3#:46.
  • Colby Paul tied it 1-1 when she found the top of the cage on a penalty stroke at 51:27. It was the first collegiate goal for the rookie midfielder.
  • Breward moved the Herons back in front with her goal at 54:26. Rebecca Mantione's insurance goal at 56:41 accounted for the 3-1 final.
  • William Smith outshot Skidmore 14-4 and had a 12-3 penalty corner advantage. Victoria Bodnar compiled six saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Brittany Foster had two for the Herons.
