Thoroughbreds upend #7 Babson in overtime

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team stunned nationally seventh-ranked Babson College on Thursday with a 2-1 overtime victory. Senior Carrie Hughes scored both goals for the Thoroughbreds and sophomore goalie Victoria Bodnar posted a career high 11 saves.

  • On a penalty corner insert 1:47 into the extra frame, Kayla Hassett sent it to Hughes, who took a step and fired a shot that rang off the back of the cage for the winner.
  •  All three goals in the game were scored on penalty corners.
  • Skidmore (5-2) took a 1-0 lead at the 40:44 mark when Carly Shea played the insert to Hughes, whose shot deflected off a Babson (4-3) defender's stick on the way in.
  • Babson scored the equalizer with 4:02 remaining in regulation. On a Beaver penalty corner, newly inserted Meara Hanyon sent a pass across to Brianna McGrath on the right wing to set up the shot through traffic.
  • The tying goal came on Babson's ninth penalty corner of the fourth quarter alone and 20th overall. Skidmore finished with 12 corners, including all three in the overtime period.
  • After the stingy Skidmore defense did not allow a shot attempt in the first quarter, Babson produced 28 shots, 13 on target, over the final 45 minutes of regulation.
  • Skidmore finished with 12 shots including four shots on goal. Hughes tallied seven of the Thoroughbred shot attempts.
  • With two more goals, and 11 now on the season, Hughes ranks fourth in Division III with 1.50 goals per game.
  • Bayla Furmanek had two saves for Babson. McGrath accounted for 15 shots and seven on target, including the Beaver goal.
  • In the head-to-head series, Skidmore's win breaks up a five-game winning streak by Babson. In the all-time series, Skidmore now leads 11-6 dating back to 2004.
  • Skidmore's last two wins have come in overtime, including 3-2 thriller at Geneseo on Sept. 11.
  • NEXT UP: The Thoroughbreds will ride the wave into league play on Saturday, Sept. 24 when Skidmore hosts St. Lawrence University at 2 p.m.
