Thoroughbreds suffer pair of heartbreaks at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team dropped a pair of one-run games at Union on Saturday. Union nailed the would-be tying run at home to end game one, 7-6, before walking off game two for a 3-2 win.

GAME ONE
  • Skidmore got off to a blazing start, scoring five runs in the first inning. Three walks loaded the bases for Kate Wilkie, who drove in the first Thoroughbred run on an infield grounder. Genesis Delgado doubled in two runs before an RBI single by Franny Casillas and a Dana Ragen sacrifice fly.
  • The Dutchwomen answered with one in the bottom half of the first inning on a dropped fly ball.
  • Union closed the gap to two in the second inning with help from two more dropped pop ups.
  • Four singles and a two-run triple by Karson Saunders gave Union four in the fourth and a two-run lead.
  • Chloe McGonagle singled to open the seventh. After moving up on a wild pitch, she scored on a Kaitlyn Judd single. Pinch runner Grace O'Connell, the tying run, advanced to third with one out on a Delgado single through the middle. Union relief pitcher Amanda Granato induced two come backers, sandwiched by a walk to Carolina Garcia to load the bases, to secure the win for Union. Granato forced O'Connell out at the plate for the third out to end it.
  • Delgado had three hits in four trips with two RBI and a run.
  • McGonagle scored twice and was 1-for-2.

GAME TWO
  • Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Union scored the tying run on a Tara Hartnett triple down the line in right. After a pitching change, Julissa Malana brought in the game-winning run on an infield ground ball that was late getting back to the plate.
  • After 3.5 scoreless innings, Union broke through in the fourth when Olivia Valery hit a one-out double and later scored on a Tatum Perkins two-bagger.
  • Katie Anderson smashed a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to give the Thoroughbreds the lead.
  • Dutchwoman relief pitcher Riley Callahan retired the final eight batters she faced to set up the Union comeback.
  • Meghan Robertson went 6.1 innings in the start for Skidmore. She was charged with all three Union runs while scattering eight hits and two walks.
  • Game two featured just two strikeouts, both by Union pitching.
