Thoroughbreds fall in overtime playoff heartbreaker

CANTON, N.Y.—The Skidmore College women's basketball team fought hard for 45 minutes, but in the end St. Lawrence University prevailed 64-60 in overtime in a Liberty League quarterfinal.

The Thoroughbreds shook off Friday's 31-point loss to the Saints to narrowly miss the upset.

Skidmore ends the season at 14-10. SLU is 21-4 and will face Vassar College in the Liberty League semifinals on Saturday at Ithaca College.

Cassie Davidson scored a game-high 19 points. Kate McCarney added 16 points and three assists. Clare Driscoll had nine points, eight rebounds and four blocks, while Julia Blanck pulled down 11 rebounds to go along with four blocks.

Ava McCann and Katie Frederick led the Saints with 13 points each. Frederick had 10 rebounds.

There was never more than a two-possession advantage for either team in a game that featured 14 lead changes and 13 ties.

McCarney and Davidson combined on a key play at the end of regulation. Tied 54-54, with the :08 on the game clock and :01 left on the shot clock, McCarney inbounded the ball under her own basket to Davidson who converted the layup for a 56-54 lead. The Saints responded with Frederick tying the game with :00.9.

Overtime played as tight as regulation. Dylan Watkiss hit a three for SLU with :40 left for a 61-58 lead. Blanck hit a pair of free throws to cut it to 61-60 with :22 left. A Saint turnover gave the Thoroughbreds a chance to go ahead with :11 left, but a Frederick block temporarily stopped the threat. Skidmore couldn't convert on the in-bounds pass and the Saints went 3-4 from the line for the 64-60 final.

Skidmore was playing in its sixth tournament in the past nine seasons. The 14 wins was the program's most since the 2017-18 season.
