Men’s soccer places five on All-Liberty League teams

TROY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team placed five members on the All-Liberty League list. Junior forward Kamal Ibrahim garnered First Team Honors, sophomore defender Max Heberlein was voted to the Second Team, and Honorable Mention honors were bestowed to senior forward Finn Weber, junior defender James Varriano, and senior goalkeeper Bobby Stratts.
 
  • Five selections match the 2021 squad, which achieved the most all-conference nods since 2016.
  • Skidmore finished the 2022 season with a record of 9-4-6 and an appearance in the championship game.
 
Kamal Ibrahim – First Team All-Liberty League
  • Ibrahim was an offensive juggernaut all year for the Thoroughbreds. He scored 15 goals to tie the program's single season record and lead the Liberty League.
  • Ibrahim's goals often came in bunches. Five times among his 19 games played he recorded multi-goal games, including a three-goal output on Oct. 19 versus Union.
  • Ibrahim registered six game-winning goals, including game winners in three out of Skidmore's four Liberty League wins. He also scored the game-winning goal against Hobart in the First Round and converted a penalty kick against Vassar in the Semifinal.
  • His junior season ended as the league leader in shots on goal (31), goals, game-winning goals, and points (30).
 
Max Heberlein – Second Team All-Liberty League
  • An Honorable Mention recipient in 2021, Heberlein started all 19 games for the Thoroughbreds in 2022 as a defender.
  • He was a key contributor to the defensive unit that allowed the third fewest goals (17) on the season.
  • Heberlein also contributed offensively. In addition to his duties inserting long offensive throw ins, Heberlein scored two goals including Skidmore's tally in the championship contest.
 
Finn Weber – All-Liberty League Honorable Mention
  • Weber started all 19 games for Skidmore and finished with three goals and three assists for nine points.
  • Two of Weber's goals served as game winners (9/11 vs. Haverford, 10/25 vs. Springfield).
  • Weber's three assists led the Skidmore fleet.
  • He also finished tied for second amongst the Thoroughbreds with 44 shots.
 
James Varriano – All-Liberty League Honorable Mention
  • Varriano was a consistent shutout defender for the Thoroughbreds in his junior year.
  • After taking over a starting role, Varriano started all 19 games for Skidmore.
  • Skidmore finished with the third fewest goals allowed and a goal differential of +16 which tied for second-best in the Liberty League.
  • Varriano pitched in offensively at the end of the year with four shots, two on frame, over Skidmore's final four games.
 
Bobby Stratts – All-Liberty League Honorable Mention
  • Stratts ended his senior year in a groove with four consecutive shutouts through the first two rounds of the Liberty League Tournament.
  • In total, Stratts posted seven shutouts. He finished with a 9-4-6 record, a 0.88 goals-against average, and a .855 save percentage.
  • Stratts finished second in the Liberty League with an even 100 saves, second in shutouts, fourth in GAA, and third in saves per game.
  • In the semifinal penalty kick victory at Vassar, Stratts stopped three of the Brewer's final four shooters to lead Skidmore to an appearance in the championship.
