2022-23 Riding Season Preview

Riders to begin season this weekend with championship aspirations

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College riding team is set to open its 2022-23 season on the road on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Hartwick College.

Last year, the Thoroughbreds finished third at the IHSA Zone 2 Finals hosted by St. Lawrence. Skidmore will host the Zone Finals in April for the first time since 2017 with the hope to capture the team title and a team trip to the IHSA Nationals for the first time since 2019 (2020 and 2021 events canceled), when the Thoroughbreds finished fourth in the country.

"We are looking forward to starting our competition this year," said Skidmore head coach Belinda Colgan. "The team is excited and ready to go!"

Skidmore sent three riders to Nationals in 2022 as individuals. Two 2022 graduates (Laurel Gaddis, Jade Bacherman) competed in addition to sophomore Harper Sanford, who rode to a ninth-place finish in the Individual Open Equitation on the Flat.

Skidmore will host three consecutive shows after going to Hartwick to finish the semester and will open again in February with four events to tune up for the Region 3 Finals at Skidmore's Van Lennep Riding Center March 25 followed by the Zone 2 Finals April 8. The IHSA Nationals are scheduled for May 4-7.

Skidmore has won a pair of national titles in the past decade, most recently in 2018.
