2022-23 Swimming & Diving Season Preview

Swimming & diving teams set to open season on the road

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's and women's swimming and diving teams will open the 2022-23 season on the road this weekend with dual matches against St. Lawrence and SUNY Potsdam.

Both teams claimed victory over the Saints a year ago at home in the last meeting between the schools. The women have won the past six duals against St. Lawrence, while the women have now won two in a row in a series that features traditionally close battles. Last year, both teams also defeated Potsdam in mid-November in a home dual.

"We're excited to open up our season against St. Lawrence " said Skidmore head coach Jill Greenleaf. "Our programs have a long history of close contests, and I expect this year's meet to be no different. While our men look to be at a depth advantage, I know there will be some great matchups in individual races as they have added a strong freshman class to match ours. On the women's side, our team won the last two dual meets, so we're looking to build that streak. On Saturday, we look for our athletes to demonstrate some versatility in our events to help us prepare for the league opponents ahead.  It should be a good test of we can utilize some of our athletes in different ways."

The men's squad consists of six seniors: Brian Borchard, David DeFronzo, Noah Fryou, Miles Herman, Ethan Hull, Jing Wang Ou Yang; two juniors: Devin Herbinger, Alex Jefferson; eight sophomores: Ryan Delfico, Liam Keating, David Marcello, Will Quinn, Keegan Scharoun, Gavin Schiavi, Danny Schnitzer, Nic Sodi; and five first years: Kyle Heise, Brandon Lis, Brendan Lu, Nathan Randall, Tomas Ruiz.

The men finished fifth, the best in program history, at the 2022 Liberty League Championships. As part of the meet, Sodi won the 1650 title in school-record fashion to become Skidmore's first event champion in the short history of the conference championships.

The women's team is comprised of six seniors Lexi Benfante, Abbi Brown, Riley Correll, Lizzie Day, Anna Naggert, Rachel Olson; four juniors: April Cook, Molly Jordan, Elissa Miller, Caroline Rogers; four sophomores Caroline Brown, Emily Czelusniak, Chloe Kim, Sophia May; and 12 first years: Emma Bedard, Izzie Crampton, Gretchen Gwitt, Ginny Hunt, Sadie Lyons, Abby MacAllister, Kailey Murphy, Ella Palmet, Liv Rogers, Catherine Shen, Holly Staats, Lydia Walker.

The women finished eighth at the league championships in February. Caroline Rogers and Cook both registered top-six finishes in the meet.

"It should be a great weekend to open our dual meet season," Greenleaf said. "Our team is excited to race and rip some dives!"
