Skidmore staves off Union 2-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team improved to 2-2 in Liberty League play with a 2-1 home victory over Union College on Friday afternoon at Wagner Park.

  • Senior Carrie Hughes scored both Skidmore goals for her 17th and 18th of the year. Her lead in the league's scoring race swelled to six. Three players are currently tied for second with 12 goals.
  • The Thoroughbreds improve to 8-6 overall. With three league games remaining, Skidmore is in sole possession of fifth place, with a one-game lead and tie breaker over Union (9-3, 1-3 Liberty League).
  • During the contest, the Skidmore field hockey program hosted its annual Field Hockey vs. Cancer game, with all proceeds going to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Donations are still being accepted: Venmo-@SCFHvsCancer.
  • Hughes opened the scoring in the final minute of the first quarter on a penalty stroke.
  • The rest of the first half was played scoreless, and Skidmore doubled its lead at 42:09 on a Hughes blast on a penalty corner. Tobi Dolan had the assist, their first assist and third point after scoring on Wednesday at Middlebury.
  • Union seized the momentum by cutting the lead in half with 5:14 remaining. The Dutchwomen's leading scorer Emily Dawson scored the unassisted goal.
  • Union threatened for the late equalizer but was turned away by one of Victoria Bodnar's three saves and a Dolan defensive stand in the midfield in the closing seconds.
