Skidmore secures weekend split with 57-52 win over Union

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College women's basketball team defeated Union College 57-52 in a Liberty League game on Saturday.
 
The Thoroughbreds are 10-5 overall and 5-5 in the league following the weekend split. The Dutchwomen fall to 5-11 and 3-7.
 
Kate McCarney led the way with 18 points and five assists for Skidmore. She iced the game with a pair of made free throws with seven seconds left to make it a two-possession game. Minutes earlier, McCarney drained a jumper to break a 48-all stalemate. Julia Blanck scored a dozen and had 13 rebounds. She also made both free throws in the final minute. Skidmore was 16-of-19 (84.2 percent) from the free-throw line on the afternoon. Andi Levitz scored 11 points for the Thoroughbreds, all in the first half, on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range.
 
Amber Raisner led the Dutchwomen attack with 19 points and four assists. Olivia Pachla and Darby Leid had eight points apiece. Both teams scored 22 points in the paint and 12 off turnovers. Skidmore held a 17-7 edge in bench points, while Union had seven second-chance points to Skidmore's three.
 
Skidmore led by as much as 11 points in the first half but settled for a six-point lead at the break. Union jumped out in the third quarter with a quick 10-2 run to lake its first lead of the afternoon. The Thoroughbreds scored the game's next eight points to re-gain its six-point lead.
 
Anna Metcalf drilled a 3-pointer to cut Skidmore's deficit to one. Then, the Dutchwomen made five free throws against a pair of Thoroughbred free throws from Maddie Hastings to tie it at 48. Raisner made a jump shot to make it a one-point game again with 2:12 remaining, but McCarney and Blanck combined to end it via free throws.
 
Skidmore returns home on Tuesday, Feb. 1 to host William Smith.
