Thoroughbreds solid in season opening tournament

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—Freshman Kevin McGough shot 72-74—146 to tie for 10th to lead the Skidmore College golf team to an eighth place finish in the 37th Duke Nelson Invitational played on the Par 71 Ralph Myhre Course at Middlebury College.
 
The Thoroughbreds shot rounds of 309-309—618 to finish four strokes in front of 9th place Williams. Babson College (293-287—580) won the 23-team event, by one stroke over New York University. Middlebury (303-288-591) was third, Hamilton (297-295—592) fourth and Trinity (297-299-596) fifth.
 
Middlebury's Hogan Beazley earned medalist honors with 72-68—140.
 
McGough eagled the par-five first hole in his opening round, to go along with three birdies. He totaled five birdies for the 36 holes.
 
Evan Forerest tied for 27th with 73-79—152. John Guerrera (85-73—158) tied for 54th after four second-round birdies. Corey Carter (84-83—167) tied for 88th.
 
Skidmore is at the Williams Invitational Sept. 18-19.
