Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Skidmore falls in Liberty League Semifinals to Ithaca on penalty kicks

TROY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team was defeated by Ithaca College in penalty kicks in the Liberty League Semifinals on Saturday at RPI. The Bombers won the penalty shootout 3-0 after 110 minutes of scoreless play.

The Thoroughbreds end the season with a record of 9-5-4. Ithaca is 8-5-6 and will move on to the title game on Sunday against St. Lawrence. The Saints upset host RPI, 2-0, in the first semifinal.

The Bombers went 3-for-3 in PKs with goals from Chris Ogden, Alex Leahy, and the clincher from Jon Kyriakidis. Lee Folger made saves on all three penalties from Skidmore.

It is the third time in a row and fifth time in the last seven meetings dating back to 2015 that the teams played to a tie. Similar to the 1-1 draw in mid-October in Saratoga Springs, team statistics were nearly identical.

Ithaca had a slight 16-15 edge in shots, but both teams required the opposing goalkeeper to make four saves. Skidmore had seven corner kicks to Ithaca's four, and the Bombers committed 12 fouls while the Thoroughbreds were called for five. Skidmore had the narrowest of possession time edges: 51-49%.

Roman Toepler and Kamal Ibrahim had three shots each to lead Skidmore. Max Heberlein, Toepler, Finn Weber, and Alec Llerena accounted for the shots on target.

Bobby Stratts made three of his saves in regulation and his fourth and final late in the second overtime period, when an Ithaca shot deflected off of a Skidmore defender in front before he was able to corral it.

Skidmore had one shot on goal in overtime at the 92:44 mark, shortly after a Thoroughbred corner kick, but Folger handled the high shot cleanly. Ithaca pressured late in the second overtime before Skidmore was able to get a goal kick to run out the clock and push it to penalties.

The Thoroughbreds ended the season without surrendering a goal over their final 406:50 of play.
