Thoroughbreds upset #12 Williams

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The 16th ranked Skidmore College women's tennis knocked off #12 WIlliams College in a dominating 7-2 victory on Saturday.

The Thoroughbreds move to 6-1, while the Ephs are 0-2.

Skidmore's Renee Karchere-Sun and Jessica Ampel salvaged an 8-6 win at number two doubles, to prevent a Williams sweep entering singles.

The momentum carried over into singles, with the Thoroughbreds winning every match. Risa Fukushige dominated in singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Maya Lal (6-7, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1), Lily Feldman (6-4, 6-0), Karchere-Sun (6-4, 3-6, 6-3), Chanhtel Thongphok (6-3, 6-3), and Audrey Soohoo (1-6, 7-5, 12-10) all got wins to help secure the 7-2 victory.

"Great win for not only these players, but for the Skidmore program." said head coach Curt Speerschneider, "We had a little bit extra riding on this match after we narrowly lost to them last year. A situation like that we could've either come out tight or with a chip on our shoulder.

"I could tell from the first ball that we weren't going to let the same thing happen against this year." he continued, "We played with a great amount of confidence, energy, and resolve. Most of all, we played as a unified team, which is why I'm most excited to see what we can do the rest of the way."

The Thoroughbreds head south for Spring Break, opening with a match at Mary Washington on March 13 at 2 p.m. in the Blue Grey Invitational.
