No. 16 Skidmore reaches Liberty League final after shutout of RIT

Skidmore reaches its 13th consecutive Liberty League Championship match, will face Vassar for title

ITHACA, N.Y. – It took about 90 minutes for the 16th-ranked Skidmore College women's tennis team to advance to its 13th consecutive Liberty League final Saturday morning, as the top-seeded Thoroughbreds shut out fourth-seeded RIT 5-0 in the league semifinal held at the Reis Tennis Center on the campus of Cornell University.

Skidmore (12-6) wins its 20th consecutive Liberty League Tournament match. The Thoroughbreds will take on second-seeded Vassar in the championship match Sunday at 10 a.m. It will be the 14th meeting between the two teams in the championship match, with Skidmore holding an 8-5 advantage. RIT finishes its school-record season at 13-6.

Lily Feldman and Sofia Carlsson got the Thoroghbreds off to a good start with their 8-0 sweep of Claire Casalnova and Annie Steinbrink at third doubles. Not too long after, Jessica Ampel and Audrey SooHoo defeated Amelia Ying and Shayna Ginster 8-1 at No. 2. Risa Fukushige and Renee-Karchere Sun completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Anne Taylor and Kristen Zablonski.

Fukushige put Skidmore at the brink of victory with her 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Ying at first singles. It was the first postseason singles victory for the All-American, as her four singles matches last postseason went unfinished. Laura Swenson then sent Skidmore to the league title game with her 6-1, 6-0 victory against Kirsten Auble at No. 6. Dea Koiava, Karchere-Sun, SooHoo, and Feldman were leading in their matches when the Thoroughbreds clinched the dual win.
