POTSDAM, N.Y.—The Skidmore College softball team lost a pair of one-run Liberty League games, 5-4 and 2-1 to Clarkson University Sunday afternoon.
The losses eliminate the Thoroughbreds from playoff contention. Skidmore is 16-20 and 4-8 in league play. The Golden Knights (25-13, 9-5) clinched a playoff spot with the wins.
Skidmore will close out the season at home on Monday at 3 p.m. with a rescheduled double header against Union College, starting at 3
p.m.
GAME 1
Hannah Davis spotted Skidmore a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double, but Clarkson responded with four in its half for a quick 4-1 lead.
The Thoroughbreds battled back to tie it with three runs in the fifth inning on another Davis RBI double and a two-run single off the bat of
Karly Fishkin.
The Golden Knights responded with an unearned run in the fifth and held on for the 5-4 win.
Davis and Fishkin were 2-4 each and
Emily Popp was 2-3. Davis took the complete game loss. She allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits. She struck out seven and walked two.
GAME 2
Fishkin continued to hit well, going 4-4.
Hannah Paolucci was 1-3 with a triple and scored on a
Kaitlyn Judd single.
Clarkson went up 1-0 in the second inning. Skidmore tied it in the fifth, but the Golden Knights got the eventual game winner in its half of the fifth for the 2-1 final. The Thoroughbreds stranded eight runners.
Emily Popp pitched well, allowing two runs on eight hits with no walks and three strike outs.
