SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's soccer team caught a pair of unlucky breaks as its upset bid falls short against No. 14 Plattsburgh, 2-1, in non-league action at Wachenheim Field Saturday afternoon.
Skidmore falls to 3-2 on the season, while Plattsburgh improves to 5-1.
Despite Skidmore dominating possession, a 23-4 shot count, and an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks, Plattsburgh was able to make the most of its opportunities. In the 14
th minute, a well-placed through pass by Katie Matott from their own end found Amanda Steinman behind the defense, as she was able to break away and take a low shot that beat starting Skidmore freshman keeper
Ava Keller low and to her left.
In the 73
rd minute, against the run of play, Jessica Mangieri launched a curled shot from a little over 40 yards out, the ball going past freshman goalie
Vivian Montgomery-Walsh and into the upper right corner of the net.
After trailing 1-0, Skidmore kept the pressure going and got on the board in the 54
th minute. After a header by senior
Emma Basso was tipped away from Plattsburgh goalie Taylor Adams, senior
Courtney Shaw was there to clean up, knocking the rebound past the keeper.
Late in the contest, with Skidmore trailing, the Thoroughbreds launched a medley of crosses into net, only to be denied by the Plattsburgh defense. Skidmore's best chances came in the game's final two minutes. With 1:27 to go, a header by sophomore
Yasmine Boukari was tipped away by Adams and out of bounds. Off of the second Skidmore corner 14 seconds later, the ball corralled to senior
Emily Mendes, who made a move to get past a defender, launching a curled chip shot that Adams barely tipped away, eventually preserving the victory for her team.
Skidmore begins Liberty League action in its next game, facing a ranked opponent for the third straight contest. This time, No. 2 William Smith comes to Saratoga Springs on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.
