SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team wrapped up the 2018 season, splitting a doubleheader with Union, in Liberty League action at Alexander Field Sunday afternoon. Skidmore dropped game one by a 4-3 score, but rallied to defeat Union 4-2 in the finale.
Skidmore finishes its season at 18-20 overall and 5-9 in the league. Union (8-18, 6-6 Liberty League) clinches the final playoff spot and will face either RPI or Ithaca in the Liberty League Tournament next weekend.
In game one, the rookies provided the Skidmore offense, as
Hannah Paolucci began the scoring with an RBI single, giving the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead. Union would tie it in the second, but
Nicole Rosner pulled Skidmore ahead with a two-out, RBI double to give the Thoroughbreds a 3-1 lead.
Union manufactured a pair of runs in the fourth to tie the game at three. Skidmore threatened to take the lead in the sixth but were unable to get a run home with runners at second and third. The Dutchwomen would walk off in the bottom of the seventh, as Kendall Rogoff hit a two-out, RBI double to earn the victory.
Skidmore would tally 10 hits in game one but leave nine runners stranded. Paolucci and
Lizette Roman-Johnston each tallied three hits, while
Heather Mak went 2-for-2.
Amanda Carilli (14-12) struck out a pair of batters in 6.2 innings pitched. Catherine Raeter (2-5) earned the victory in relief, pitching four scoreless innings.
Union took the early lead in game two on a two-RBI double in the third inning. Skidmore would respond late, as Paolucci uncorked a two-run homer in the sixth to tie the game at two. In the top of the seventh, Roman-Johnston got Skidmore ahead with a two-out, two-RBI double in her final at-bat as a Thoroughbred, giving Skidmore the 4-2 lead. Carilli (15-12) would retire the side in order to wrap up the 2018 season with a victory.
Pitching in her final Skidmore game, Carilli picked up a school-record 50
th career victory, striking out six in seven innings pitched. Roman-Johnston and Paolucci each tallied two hits, with
Jill Strileckis and
Kristina Foley each tallying a hit in their final game.
Karly Fishkin went 1-for-3 with her 13th double of the season, tying a Skidmore season record, which was set by Lauren Fortunato in 2016 and 2017. As a team, the Thoroughbreds hit 72 doubles and totaled 446 bases, new Skidmore records. Dana Dolinko (3-8) allowed four earned on seven hits in seven innings pitched.
