Skidmore completes regular season with sweep

WILTON, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's tennis team finished the regular season in style after a busy Saturday, defeating St. Lawrence 9-0 in the regular season finale, in Liberty League action at the Wilton YMCA.
 
Skidmore (13-5, 8-0 Liberty League), ranked 18th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III poll, finishes the league season undefeated for the second season in a row. The Thoroughbreds have won the regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament, receiving a bye into the semifinals on May 5.  St. Lawrence (9-10, 6-2) earns the third seed and will await an opponent for the quarterfinal on May 4.
 
 
Before the match with St. Lawrence, Skidmore competed in the inaugural Capital Doubles competition, held at Union College. In the first match, the team of Michelle Fuca and Risa Fukushige defeated Union's Megan Brown and Julianne Loree 8-0. They then defeated teammates Laura Swenson and Alexa Goldberg 8-1.

Moving to the YMCA, Skidmore was dominant in all facets of its victory against St. Lawrence. Fuca and Fukushige completed a perfect day with an 8-1 victory at first doubles against Emily Wyman and Lia Petersen. At No. 2, Ada Wiggins and Renee Karchere-Sun defeated Katherine Apt and Caroline Reilly 8-3. Alexa Goldberg and Jessica Ampel completed the doubles sweep with the 8-1 victory at No. 3.
 
In singles, Wiggins and Ampel were perfect in their respective victories at No. 2 and No. 6. Wiggins defeated Petersen 6-0, 6-0, while Ampel defeated Haley Sherrard by the same score. Laura Swenson was near perfect in her 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 against Grace van Tartwijk. Fukushige topped Wyman 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, while Fuca defeated Reilly by the same score at No. 4. Karchere-Sun defeated Apt 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 to complete the sweep.
 
The upcoming Liberty League Tournament will be held at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y., on the campus of Cornell University, from May 4-6.
