Skidmore drops pair to No. 24 Williams

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team fell victim to the long ball, as 24th-ranked Williams earned a doubleheader sweep, in non-league action at Wagner Park on a windy Thursday afternoon. Williams won 8-0 and 9-2, with both games going five innings.

Skidmore falls to 15-19 overall. Williams, the 24th-ranked team in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III poll, improves to 28-6 overall.

The Thoroughbreds only tallied one hit in the game one loss, with Lizette Roman-Johnston getting on with a single in the third inning. Williams would score two in the third and six in the fourth, including a Mackenzie Murphy one-out grandslam.

Rebecca Duncan (11-3) picked up the win, allowing the one hit, striking out nine in five innings pitched. Emily Popp (0-6) struck out a batter in five innings, allowing seven earned.

Game two saw Williams take an early lead with runs in the second and third inning, but Skidmore tied things up in the bottom of the third. With runners on second and third with one out, Karly Fishkin doubled down the left field line on a 3-1 pitch, scoring Roman-Johnston and Heather Mak. Williams would retake the lead (3-2) in the top of the fourth, then hit two home runs in a six-run fifth, before the game was called due to darkness.

Fishkin went 2-for-3 in game two. Roman-Johnston (1-for-3) and Mak (1-for-1) would tally the other Thoroughbred hits. Jessica Kim went 3-for-3 to lead the Ephs, hitting a double, triple, and a home run. She also scored thrice.

Murphy (11-1) picked up the win in relief, striking out one in two innings. Kristin Mapes allowed two earned and struck out four in three innings. Amanda Carilli (12-11) allowed nine in five innings pitched.

Skidmore will return to Liberty League action this weekend, taking on Clarkson in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Thoroughbreds will honor its 2018 senior class after game two.
