SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College softball team lost a pair of tight Liberty League games, 10-8 and 3-1, to St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at Wagner Park.
The losses leave the Thoroughbreds at 15-15 overall and 2-6 in league play. The Saints even their record at 10-10 overall and 2-2 in conference.
In the first game, St. Lawrence sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven run second inning to go up 7-3. Taylor Armijo keyed the inning with a two run triple that rattled around the right field corner.
Playing as the visiting team, Skidmore chipped away with three in the top of the third.
Lizette Roman-Johnston drilled an RBI triple down the left field line.
Hannah Paolucci worked a two-out 0-2 count into a nine-pitch at bat the culminated in an RBI double. She then scored on an infield error.
The Saints responded with three more in the bottom of the third. Skylar Hein delivered a two-run double to make it 10-3.
The Thoroughbreds cut it to 10-8 with five runs in the sixth. Roman-Johnston cleared the bases with a grand slam home run to center.
Kristina Foley had an RBI double to close the scoring.
Allie Cartwright came in to stop the Skidmore onslaught with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief for her first save of the season.
Roman-Johnston was 2-5 with two runs and five RBI and Paolucci finished 2-4 with two runs and one RBI. Starter
Amanda Carilli (12-7) was tagged with the loss.
Caroline Young (6-4) had the win in relief for the Saints.
There were less fireworks in the second game that featured several outstanding defensive plays and solid pitching by both starters.
St. Lawrence did all of its scoring with two outs in the second. Caitlin Syphurs had an RBI double and a Deanna Sullivan had a two-run single.
Skidmore scored its run on an
Emily Popp double in the third.
Three standout defensive plays kept the game close for the Thoroughbreds. In the third inning,
Karly Fishkin went deep behind second to get to a hard hit ball and then throw out the Saint runner. In the fourth,
Adrianna Garcia made to big plays at third on a hard grounder and a tough line drive.
Popp finished 2-3.
Amanda Carilli took the complete game loss. She allowed five runs on three hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Courtwright (2-2) gave up one run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Skidmore travels to league leader Renssealar for a pair on Sunday.
