Skidmore shuts out SVC in doubleheader sweep

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior pitcher Amanda Carilli moved into second place on the all-time wins list after a pair of solid performances in the circle, leading the Skidmore College softball team to a pair of victories against Southern Vermont, at Wagner Park Tuesday afternoon. Skidmore won game one 7-0 and game two 9-0 in five innings.

The Thoroughbreds (9-7) have won five of the last six games, averaging 7.2 runs per game. The Mountaineers fall to 0-12.

Pitching on her birthday, Carilli was rock-solid on the mound, allowing just three hits through seven scoreless innings pitched in two games to earn her 40th and 41st career victories. She stands six wins away from the all-time mark of 47.

Game one saw Carilli (5-2) pitch 2.2 perfect innings, before Southern Vermont got its first hit of the game on a shot up the middle. The senior would pitch four innings, striking out a season-high five batters. Emily Popp would relive Carilli with three scoreless innings, striking out a season-best seven batters.

On the offensive end, Skidmore would score twice in the second, third, and sixth innings and once in the fifth to pull away from Southern Vermont, getting its seven runs on nine hits. Nicole Rosner went 1-for-2, driving in two runs and walking twice. Popp, Jill Strileckis, and Drew Bugna each tallied two hits, with Bugna driving in a run. Lizette Roman-Johnston and Hannah Paolucci would each drive in a run, going 1-for-3.

Shea Wilson (0-6) would get the loss for Southern Vermont, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over five innings pitched. Emma Griffith would get the only two hits for the Mountaineers, going 2-for-2.

In game two, Southern Vermont would threaten early, getting runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings. Rosner, the starting pitcher, would pitch her way out of trouble, with the Skidmore defense helping her out to keep the Mountaineers off the board.

The game would turn for the Thoroughbreds in the bottom of the third. After Skidmore began the inning with a pair of singles by Roman-Johnston and Karly Fishkin, Paolucci would bring them home with a two-RBI single, getting Skidmore on the board with the 2-0 score. In the bottom of the fifth, with darkness looming, the Skidmore bats came alive with a seven-run inning to end the game via the eight-run rule. Paolucci got the party started with a triple, then Popp brought her home with a one-out double to right center. Two batters later, Kristina Foley scored Heather Mak with a one-out single to the left side, then Foley and Rosner scored on a throwing error by the Mountaineers in the next at-bat, giving the Thoroughbreds a 6-0 lead. Adrianna Garcia would walk and Nelson would get on with a looping single, setting the stage for a walk-off, three-run home run by Roman-Johnston to deep left center on a 1-0 pitch, her first career homer.

Roman-Johnston would lead the Thoroughbreds with a 3-for-4 effort in game two, with the three RBIs on the aforementioned homer. Paolucci would go 2-for-3, increasing her hit streak to 14 games. Eight different Thoroughbreds would register a hit.

Carilli (6-2) relieved Rosner in the third inning, pitching three scoreless innings to earn the win, striking out a batter. Rosner struck out three and allowed a hit in two innings.

Nicole Matthews would go 2-for-3 to lead Southern Vermont. Erin Girard (0-5) would take the loss, allowing eight earned over 4.1 innings pitched, striking out two.

The Thoroughbreds continue their home stand with a Saturday doubleheader against Castleton, beginning at 1 p.m.
