Skidmore remains in first after 69-58 win at Clarkson

Thoroughbreds can clinch regular season title with victory Saturday at St. Lawrence

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team sits one win away from its second straight Liberty League regular season title, after a 69-58 victory at Clarkson from Alumni Gymnasium Friday.
 
Skidmore (15-9, 13-4 Liberty League) sits in a three-way tie with Ithaca and RIT for the top spot in the league with one game remaining. The Thoroughbreds hold the three-team tie breaker and can fall no lower than third. Skidmore takes on St. Lawrence in the regular season finale Saturday at 2 p.m. Clarkson falls to 9-14 overall and 4-12 in conference.
 
The Thoroughbreds had another strong shooting performance from the field, making 53.6 percent of its shots. They've hit 50 percent of their shots in two of the last three games. Skidmore also went 3-for-6 (50 percent) from 3-point range.
 
Lilly Berg had a strong game coming off the bench, pouring in a career-high 16 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field, adding three rebounds. Kelly Donnelly tallied a team-high 17 points, adding seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Veronica continued her strong play down the stretch of the season, adding 15 points (6-for-9 from the field), four assists, three rebounds, and three steals.
 
Madison Shea tallied a game-high 19 points to lead the Golden Knights.
 
A close game for much of the first half, Skidmore began to pull away late in the second quarter. With the game tied at 20, the Thoroughbreds ended the half on an 8-3 spurt in the last 5:13, capped off by a Moceri layup with 14 seconds left to take a 28-23 lead into halftime.
 
Skidmore led for the entire second half, stretching its lead to double digits (37-26) after an and-one bucket by Caite Opfer. The Thoroughbreds led by as many as 16 points in the quarter, entering the fourth with a 14-point, 54-40 lead. Skidmore led by double digits the rest of the way, clinching the 11-point win.
 
Skidmore held Clarkson to 40.7 percent shooting in the contest and scored 18 points off 19 Golden Knight turnovers.
