Thoroughbreds close semester with Vassar

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Vassar College used a quick start on the way to a 70-48 Liberty League women's basketball win over Skidmore College Tuesday evening at the Williamson Center.
 
The Thoroughbreds finish the first semester at 2-8 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Brewers are 6-2 and 2-1.
 
Sydney Tsutsui led all scorers with 19 points for Skidmore. Haley English had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists. While Jessica Centore contributed six points and 10 rebounds.
 
Sophie Nick had a double/double for Vassar with 16 points, 11 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Isa Peczuh added 14 points, while Jackie Cenan was in double figures with 11 points.
 
The Brewers scored the game's first 14 points before Kate McCareny scored a traditional three-point play with a jumper and made free throw with 4:28 to play in the first quarter.
 
Skidmore battled back to within seven 24-17 with 7:21 left in the second quarter on consecutive baskets by Centore and Lilly Berg. The Thoroughbreds had three possessions to get closer, but were unable to convert. Vassar then went on a 17-3 run for a 41-20 lead at the half.
 
The Thoroughbreds opened the third quarter with a deep three from Tsutsui, but the Brewers kept the lead in the 20-point neighborhood for the rest of the third and into the fourth on the way to the 70-48 final.
 
Skidmore shot 29% from the floor on 18-62 shooting. After shooting 51.7% in the first half, the Brewers finished at 44.3% on 27-61 from the floor.
 
Next up for the Thoroughbreds is a 5 p.m. Jan. 4 road game at Rensselaer.
